YouTube Founders Buy Delicious from Yahoo

Yahoo announced their intentions to either sell or shutdown Delicious bookmarking service back in December last year. The fate of Delicious was not known for almost four months. Good news is that YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen have announced their intentions to buy the service from Yahoo for an undisclosed amount and continue to innovate under the new umbrella of AVOS.

As creators of the largest online video platform, they have firsthand experience enabling millions of users to share their experiences with the world. They are committed to running and improving Delicious going forward.

Yahoo will continue to run the service till July, 2011 and all your bookmarks will be moved to the new owners. Delicious will ask you to agree to AVOS terms of service for the transition to be completed.

New Firefox Add-on for Delicious

According to the transition FAQ on Delicious, AVOS will continue to innovate on Delicious platform and help share new content in a much easier fashion. They intend to release a Firefox add-on for Delicious as soon as possible. AVOS’s WordPress powered blog is down at the moment, but a plain text version of the press release is still available.

This is perhaps the best thing to have happened to Delicious. I’ve been using Delicious since the time it was del.icio.us (pre-Yahoo acquisition) and it was a pain moving all my bookmarks from Delicious to Google. Delicious has a huge fan following. Some Delicious users even wrote plugins to scrap bookmarks and tags such as this one. Glad to see Delicious not dying on itself.

Watch YouTube Live from Your iPhone or iPad

From IPL 2011 to Royal Wedding, people are using YouTube Live to stream events straight to their computers, but what if you want to check your home team’s score when you are on the move? YouTube Live needs Adobe Flash, and YouTube Live won’t work with built-in YouTube app for iOS yet.

YTLive tries to fix this by converting YouTube’s flash feed to an iOS compatible format, and then re-stream it to your iPhone or iPad’s Mobile Safari. Copy the URL of the live stream, go to YTLive web app, paste the link and you are all set to watch any live event on your iOS device as long as YTLive can handle all the traffic.

Someday, hopefully, YouTube will completely embrace HTML5 and remove the limitations faced by iOS users!

YouTube Now Sending a Video to Copyright Offenders

If people happen to receive a copyright infringement notification from YouTube, they will now have to watch a cartoon which is supposed to educate them about the evils of copyright infringement. This campaign is launched by YouTube, to reform the copyright offenders. The video is titled YouTube Copyright School, which is kind of childish but educative. Apparently, it is mandatory for offenders to watch.

And offenders cannot skip through the video because there will a short test at the end. YouTube has been coming up with strict measures to remove videos which violate the copyright laws and has been trying ever so hard to avoid lawsuits. Lets hope this works in favour of them and reforms the offenders, to some extent at least.

YouTube Now Provides Live Streaming of Events

YouTube has partnered with select firms and can now stream live videos in your browser. YouTube now provides competition to websites like Ustream and several other rival live streaming websites. Google officials had this to say in an official announcement:

“The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead.”

With the DLF IPL season just starting in India, users worldwide can stream live videos from their desktops or cellphones. You will also find a list of upcoming episodes on the site from official partners like Destructoid and many more. Or you can just add your name to the mailing list and subscribe with YouTube to get notified when a new episode is up. All you have to do is visit youtube.com/live and watch videos online.

Bookmarking your videos made easier with Radbox

The trendy ‘Watch Later’ feature on YouTube to watch videos later at your leisure time has been an exciting supplement to the popular video sharing site.

But YouTube is not the only place where you find exciting videos.Sites like Facebook, Vimeo also provide great video content but do not support video queuing like YouTube. That is history now. Because an app named Radbox makes it ever so easy and fun to queue videos from your favorite video sharing site. The app stacks up all the bookmarks in one basic location from where you can access all your bookmarked videos.

You can either e-mail the video URL to an e-mail address(accessible through cell phones too) or it will save the embedded video to the Radbox queue. Radbox supports video sharing sites like Vimeo, Google Videos, College Humor and many more.

YouTube Shuts Its Video Downloads Program

YouTube shuts down its short-lived video downloads program. Some of you must be wondering, if there even was a â€˜video downloads beta-programâ€™

YouTube in February, launched this service which allowed content creators to post both free and paid downloads to YouTube.

YouTube sent emails to the users who were allowed to upload content to this service saying that current downloads will be available, but no new ones can be posted.

David Rodriguez of StuffWeLike.com posted a video explaining the move.

Embedded YouTube Player with AdSense

When Google paid $1.65 billion to acquire YouTube, they surely had something in mind to make money out of it. Their previous attempt to monetize YouTube videos by directly inserting non-intrusive overlay ads have been deeply criticized by users. And now, the company is implementing a different strategy to monetize YouTube’s video content by placing AdSense ads into the video player.

AdSense text-based advertising will be inserted above the video. Ads will appear as a part of the YouTube player, but outside the video content appear.

Using YouTube’s custom video player option, Web publishers can customize the theme and the layout of the player to look best on their site. Web Publishers can also choose categories of video, or let Google automatically target ads based on the content. As of now, this new features hasn’t been announced by YouTube and only a limited number of users can see this under their account. Some users are also reporting that they had this option till yesterday, but now it has disappeared. Maybe, YouTube is just doing some private beta before fully rolling it out.

As a YouTube user, I think this approach to monetize YouTube is far better than the previous one, but I doubt if it works out well for Google and Web Publishers. Darren has more information here.
