We all know how Verizon lost its 4G LTE coverage some days ago right after the Samsung Droid Charge was launched. It really wasn’t the best time for Samsung to be honest. And it seems like disaster has hit Verizon now as the carrier is in trouble again with its 4G network going down. Reports of the network shortage range from Washington DC to Phoenix, Arizona. Users of the Samsung Droid Charge or the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon will have to be content with 3G speeds on their devices for now. Though it is expected of Verizon to get the network up and running soon. Needless to say, this delay could be troubling for a few users who got used to the 4G speeds.

Verizon was supposed to launch the Motorola Droid X2 today, but it turns out that due to the 4G LTE network shortage, they won’t be able to go forward with the launch. This is particularly disappointing considering the fact that this is one of Verizon’s finest handsets yet. Something similar happened with the launch of the Samsung Droid Charge, when the device was launched and Big Red’s network went down the very day of the launch, ruining the big arrival for Samsung. It is now being said that the Motorola Droid X2 will be launched on the 26th of May and direct fulfillment orders will start from May 19, by then we hope Verizon is able to sort out the network outage issue.

The Droid X2 will feature a 4.3-inch qHD display with a resolution of 540 x 960, an 8 MP camera on the back capable of 720p playback and recording, a 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU, 8 GB of internal storage with a microSD card of 8 GB, HDMI output and will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Also to be noted is the fact that Verizon is rolling out an official Android 2.3 update for the original Droid X. [Source]

This has been a major limitation with buying a cellphone on contract, you literally have to play by their rules. Users can still sideload .apks to their device though, which is something that both AT&T and Verizon cannot stop you from doing as of now. The banning of tethering applications however is a rather worrying issue, considering the fact that Android is an open source platform. But why would major carriers like these let you use it for free when they can charge you a fortune to use the same service on their network?

Amazon has come up with a way to promote its Android app store with a promotional offer. Starting from today, if you buy an Android smartphone on Verizon’s network, you get a $25 reward, but this amount will not be directly redeemable by you. Instead, you will have to make app purchases worth $25 on the Amazon App Store. This is a one week promotional offer so if you’re planning to buy a new Android device Amazon should be the place to go. Verizon has devices like the HTC Thunderbolt on Amazon for $129 on a two year contract.

The Amazon App Store is slowly making its way to the business and trying to give a healthy competition to Google’s Android Market. But Google’s Android Market is still a juggernaut with over 150,000 apps compared to Amazon’s mere 7000+ apps. But it’s still early days for Amazon so the comparison is unfair. Amazon recently came out with a cloud player which let users store music on cloud which could be accessed by users on the internet or with their Android smartphone. This of course could mean that T-Mobile users can see the iPhone 4 coming to their network soon. But we think the timing of this could’ve been a tad better. Because by the time the iPhone 4 would reach T-Mo users, the latest iPhone would already be in the market. So that could make this seem a bit dull. But that’s for them to decide. They’re offering the first gen iPads for prices starting as low as $299. Verizon is clearing out the Wi-Fi only models from it’s inventories and offering the entry level 16GB model for 299 bucks. The 32GB model will be sold at $399.99 and the 64GB model will be sold for $499.99 respectively.

CEO of Motorola Mobility, Sanjay Jha speaking to Reuters yesterday revealed the pricing for the Motorola XOOM tablet. He revealed that the top end version of the XOOM would cost $799 on Verizon and the basic Wi-Fi only version would cost a bit less at $600.

We recently saw the Xoom being listed for $1200 on Best Buy’s website, which was later taken down. This price seems like a competitive one, being priced a touch higher than the 32GB 3G iPad which of course doesn’t provide  4G upgrade like the XOOM. The price tag is very convincing and we could see a bunch of gadget freaks snatching this one up.

Verizon who were the top carrier in the country with most number of connections have now been dethroned by AT&T. AT&T added 2.8 million customers after which they regained the top spot with 95.5 million customers, compared to Verizon’s 94.1 million customers. Verizon came on top 2 years ago after acquiring Alltel. Even though AT&T had the exclusivity to sell the iPhone, they had not been able to come close to Verizon’s number. But due to high sales in the previous quarter, AT&T finally go past Verizon’s number.

But with the Verizon iPhone launching in two weeks, its hard to say if AT&T will be able to maintain the lead. It could only be a matter of time before Verizon regains the top spot again.

We all know how the iPhone has brought about a revolution among cell phones, creating a stir in the market right from its launch. The sales have been rapidly growing since it was launched in early 2007. And the sales numbers are quite astonishing. Over 73.5 million units have been sold as of September last year. And now Apple have the sales numbers from September 25th 2010 up to December 25th 2010 and they have managed to sell around 16.24 million iPhones. Bringing the number to a touch under 90 million(89.74 million to be precise).

Three more fiscal quarters are still remaining in this year and reaching the 100 million mark doesn’t seem like an uphill task for Apple. And the Verizon iPhone launch next month could help reach the number quicker. So the 100 million mark could be bragged about anytime before the end of this fiscal quarter or at the beginning of the next.

In the above advertisement, Apple’s iPhone is sent to the land of misfit toys due to lack of 3G coverage in AT&T’s network. Closing looking at the ad, we get a feeling that Verizon is pointing AT&T rather than iPhone itself because other toys speak about iPhone’s good feature when it spits out the 3G coverage map.

I think they are great humorous commercials. It’s not all that destructive, doesn’t express negatives about the iPhone, but just targets AT&T’s softness – lack of 3G coverage. That being said, the red heat-map of Verizon’s coverage shown in the commercial looks over exaggerated. Doesn’t look 5X, but looks more like 10x more coverage, which again would be misleading in AT&T’s point of view. What do you think?
