It’s very handy when you don’t know the exact address of any website. Let say, you want to go to the Wikipedia page of Microsoft, all you need to do is type “wiki Microsoft” into the address bar and it will run your text input through Google’s I’m feeling Lucky and takes you to Microsoft’s Wikipedia page.</p><p>That being said, it’s not always correct though. If it’s not sure about your query, it will simply take you to Google search results page for your query. But sometimes your address bar might change its default search engine with Yahoo or Bing without your knowledge thanks to some rogue application or erratic behavior by some Firefox add-on, and this can be very irritating since Firefox doesn’t provide easy way to change the default search provider of your location bar. If this ever happens to you, here’s how you fix it:</p><p>1. Open Firefox and type “<strong>about:config</strong>” (without quotes) and press Enter</p><p><img style="margin: 0px auto; display: block; float: none;" title="Firefox about:config to change search" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/firefox-about-config.png" alt="Firefox about:config to change search" width="473" height="202" /></p><p>2. Firefox will throw a witty caution message saying “<strong>This might void your warranty!</strong>” &#8211; Just hit “<strong>I’ll be careful, I promise!</strong>” button and move on</p><p><img style="margin: 0px auto; display: block; float: none;" title="Change Search Preference" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/firefox-keywordurl.png" alt="Change Search Preference" width="500" height="180" /></p><p>3. Use the filter text entry box to search for <strong>keyword.URL</strong>. Double click the Preference Name (keyword.URL) and paste <strong>Google’s I’m Feeling Lucky search URL &#8211; <a href="http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&amp;q">http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&amp;q</a>=</strong></p><p><img style="margin: 0px auto; display: block; float: none;" title="Add Search URL to Firefox Address Bar" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/firefox-enter-string.png" alt="Add Search URL to Firefox Location Bar" width="500" height="333" /></p><p>4. That’s it</p><p>You can use the same approach to change your search engine from Google to Bing or Yahoo.</p><p>Stories you may like:<ol><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2006/09/14/firefox-quickie-convert-your-add-bar-into-search-box/' rel='bookmark' title='Firefox: Convert your Address Bar into Search Box'>Firefox: Convert your Address Bar into Search Box</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2007/09/03/quickly-adding-any-search-form-to-firefox-search-bar/' rel='bookmark' title='Quickly adding any Search Form to Firefox Search Bar'>Quickly adding any Search Form to Firefox Search Bar</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2011/04/16/keep-track-of-google-search-ranking-for-different-geo-locations/' rel='bookmark' title='Keep Track of Google Search Ranking for Different Geo-Locations'>Keep Track of Google Search Ranking for Different Geo-Locations</a></li></ol></p><p>This article, <a href="http://tech-buzz.net/2011/04/25/how-to-change-firefox-address-bar-search-from-yahoo-or-bing-to-google/">How to Change Firefox Address Bar Search from Yahoo or Bing to Google</a>, was published at <a href="http://tech-buzz.net">TechBuzz</a>. Facebook is perhaps the only service out there, which doesn’t rely of Google for traffic or anything for that matter. Facebook has the social spin for everything they do, but Google has all the data and algorithm it needs. Trying to bridge the gap this time, Google has silently rolled out a new option called “+1”</p><p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4478" title="google_+1" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/google_+1-400x216.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="216" /></p><p>In a nutshell, this is Google’s reply to all those “Like” buttons you see on Facebook and other non-Facebook websites. Rumors have been floating about “+1” for quit sometime now, but today they official unveiled it for public access. Google +1 isn’t just another “Like” or “Retweet” button, it’s much more than that. It enables users to share Google Search Results they like with their social circle, and it just doesn’t stop there. Soon, this social aspect of “+1” will also be included inside AdSense Ads. Just like how Facebook has those little “Like” buttons beneath Facebook Ads, or just like how Reddit lets you up vote or down vote sponsored ads on their site, Google “+1” will be directly injected into Adwords.</p><p style="text-align: center;">&nbsp;</p><p><img class="size-medium wp-image-4476 aligncenter" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/plusone1-400x55.png" alt="" width="400" height="55" /></p><p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4477" title="plusone2" src="http://tech-buzz.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/plusone2.png" alt="" width="400" height="68" /></p><h2>What does Google “+1” mean for Publishers?</h2><p>Google’s Matt Cutts has <a href="http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/38269453183627264">already</a> told us about Google’s intentions to include social aspect into the search results. When someone shares a link on sites like Twitter or Google Buzz, it adds more weight to the link and helps boost their ranking parameters. Google “+1” will most certainly be a parameter for ranking in the future. As of now, Publishers would not be able to embed “+1” buttons into their sites, but embed feature is definitely coming!</p><h2>Will Google “+1” affect Advertisers?</h2><p>AdWords is Google’s bread and butter, and Facebook has been slowly stealing their spotlight with their socially targeted Facebook ads, and the ability to “Like” ads and share it with friends. We expect a similar treatment for “+1” buttons for Adwords. The bid model would most certainly remain the same, however, “+1” button would definitely be a neat addition in reports.</p><p>Google “+1” is available as an opt-in experimental feature <a href="http://www.google.com/experimental/">here</a>.</p><p>As far as I see it, +1 button isn’t just another way to share cool links with your friends. There are endless services like Twitter/Facebook which let you do the exact same thing. That being said, the +1 button would definitely make the Adwords reports look more eye-catching, and help Google in their ranking algorithm based on personalized taste. You can watch Google’s +1 <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAyUNI3_V2c">introductory video on YouTube</a><br /> <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="530" height="328" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OAyUNI3_V2c?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br /> At the time of writing this post, Google +1 has not been rolled out in India, but I was able to enable it. If you come across a +1 button, please share your thoughts through comments.</p><p>Stories you may like:<ol><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2010/11/18/facebook-takes-a-dig-at-google-with-facebook-com/' rel='bookmark' title='Facebook takes a dig at Google with @Facebook.com'>Facebook takes a dig at Google with @Facebook.com</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2008/01/14/introducing-socialim-another-social-network-im-client/' rel='bookmark' title='Introducing social:im &#8212; Another social network IM client'>Introducing social:im &#8212; Another social network IM client</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2009/11/06/google-commerce-search-new-search-tool-for-shopping-sites/' rel='bookmark' title='Google Commerce Search &#8211; New Search Tool for Shopping Sites'>Google Commerce Search &#8211; New Search Tool for Shopping Sites</a></li></ol></p><p>This article, <a href="http://tech-buzz.net/2011/03/31/google-takes-the-social-spin-with-1-for-search-and-google-ads/">Google Takes the Social Spin with +1 for Search and Google Ads</a>, was published at <a href="http://tech-buzz.net">TechBuzz</a>. Bing has teamed up with Dealmap to launch Bing Deals, which aggregates offers from various providers like Groupon, Living Social, and Restaurant.com to name some.</p><p>Bing Deals is accessible from m.bing.com for mobiles, and they are also rolling out Bing Deals for desktop. Interestingly enough, Bing Deals is available for iPhone and Android Devices, but not on phones using Microsoft’s own Windows Phone 7.</p><p>While Windows Phone 7 users might feel a bit cold about this, Bing Team justifies this move by saying it only works on HTML-5 enabled phones. Remarkable isn’t it?</p><p>Bing Deals would soon be including flight information from airfare aggregator Kayak. It’s an enterprise tool for retail shopping sites aimed to make shopping experience more worthwhile as the holiday season is approaching.</p><blockquote><p>“Search quality is a big factor in changing visitors to buyers online, and in making customers happy too. Visitors spend <a href="https://www.marketingsherpa.com/barrier.html?ident=29929">an average of just eight seconds</a> before deciding whether or not to remain on a website, so having a good search tool is important for turning visitors into buyers. Google Commerce Search is hosted by and uses Google search technology to make online retail searching both fast and customizable” –<a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/introducing-google-commerce-search.html">Google Blog</a></p></blockquote><p>Basically, it’s targeted to make the search experience on an e-commerce site more precise. It’s hosted on Google’s cloud servers which make it more scalable and deliver results faster than standard search results on shopping sites. Stemming, Synonyms and Spell Check makes sure that online shoppers gets exactly what they are looking for, even if he or she doesn’t exactly know the product name.</p><p>For retailers, Commerce Search is integrated with other Google tools such as Google Checkout for payment handling and Google Analytics for tracking your visitor’s behavior and other metrics on the shopping site. Check out the introductory video of Google Commerce Search:</p><p align="center"><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gj7qrotOmVY&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gj7qrotOmVY&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></p><p>Shaun Ryan did <a href="http://www.sli-systems.com/blog/2009/11/google-commerce-search-a-critique.html">some research</a> on <a href="http://www.googlestore.com/googlesearch.aspx?q=tshirt">Google’s Demo shopping site</a>, which is powered by the same tool and he thinks that the product is not ready for prime time yet. He tried searching for “<a href="http://www.googlestore.com/googlesearch.aspx?q=tshirt">tshirt</a>” and it delivered no results, whereas searching for “<a href="http://www.googlestore.com/googlesearch.aspx?filter=&amp;q=t-shirt&amp;imageField.x=0&amp;imageField.y=0&amp;imageField=search">t-shirt</a>” delivered 42 results, which is quite disappointing. The price of this product is based on number of products and search queries, but starts at $50,000 per year which is quite “high” in my opinion.</p><p>Stories you may like:<ol><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2007/03/28/google-mobile-search-better-than-ever/' rel='bookmark' title='Google Mobile Search Better Than Ever'>Google Mobile Search Better Than Ever</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2007/04/12/use-search-hacker-to-find-files-via-google/' rel='bookmark' title='Use Search Hacker to find files via Google'>Use Search Hacker to find files via Google</a></li><li><a href='http://tech-buzz.net/2007/05/30/limit-search-results-to-faces-or-news-with-google-image-search/' rel='bookmark' title='Limit Search Results to Faces or News with Google Image Search'>Limit Search Results to Faces or News with Google Image Search</a></li></ol></p><p>This article, <a href="http://tech-buzz.net/2009/11/06/google-commerce-search-new-search-tool-for-shopping-sites/">Google Commerce Search &#8211; New Search Tool for Shopping Sites</a>, was published at <a href="http://tech-buzz.net">TechBuzz</a>.
