This version is targeted towards the developers to build applications around the OS and also find bugs if any. But thanks to Microsoft, even a common user can download the update and install it on his desktop. But Microsoft plans to roll out a Consumer Preview of the much awaited desktop platform at the Mobile World Congress late this month. This comes as great news for the users who were waiting for a simplified version of the OS in the wild. Users will also be able to download an array of applications from the Windows Store. Microsoft is that much closer to bringing together both the desktop and mobile platforms. But there’s no doubt that it still needs substantial amount of work.

It’s rather strange that Microsoft picked a mobile conference to reveal the consumer preview, but this as the source rightly suggests could mean that Microsoft is intending to reveal a lot more than just the consumer preview. Microsoft showed off the tablet and desktop interface of Windows 8 in June last year and it is high time that we saw something in action. Not only will Microsoft reveal the Consumer Preview of Windows 8, but also reveal some Metro applications suited for the Windows 8 experience. MS will also show off the improvements/upgrades in terms of hardware input (keyboard and mouse) as well as software (start menu changes etc). The announcement will be made on Feb 29th between 3 to 5PM CET (Central European Time).

Stories you may like:

Windows 7 Collaboration – Intel and Microsoft Tech Collaboration Delivers Consumer and Business Benefits

Microsoft Kinect Might Be Used to Detect Human Movements in Windows 8

Download Windows 7 RC Through Customer Preview Program

This article, Microsoft Showing Off Windows 8 Consumer Preview At MWC 2012, was published at TechBuzz. It seems like Microsoft wants to bring together the desktop operating system ( Windows 8 ) with the tablet and smartphone operating system. This is a great move which could go a long way in bringing forth deep integration with Windows PCs. Secondly, the ability for higher screen resolutions and the compatibility with dual core processors make it a worthy upgrade. The fact that Microsoft’s Metro UI will be seen across all Windows platforms is a welcome sign. Whoever has used a Windows Phone will know what we are talking about.

Speaking of the mobile platform, Windows Phone 8 or more popularly known as Windows Phone Apollo will not break cover until the end of the year at least. And that’s just a rough approximation, meaning that the launch date could be further delayed. We believe that the new platform (as we know it) has the potential to make an impact in the mobile industry. But there’s still one major update left before Microsoft even considers rolling out Apollo, yes we’re talking about Tango. Tango is Microsoft’s way of hitting into the low end and mid range market segment with smartphones that do not require fancy specifications. The update is also said to bring the much awaited Skype support for Windows Phones. Ironically, Skype (recently acquired by Microsoft) is available across most mobile platforms except on Windows Phones. The future looks very bright for Microsoft and even though the current market share of Windows Phones is not as much as the company would have liked to have by now, we believe things could change in the future.

Stories you may like:

1.6 Million Windows Phone 7 Handsets Sold During The First Quarter of 2011

Windows Phone 7 Could Soon be the Number Three Mobile Platform

Windows Phone Mango To Bring Web Based Marketplace

This article, So What’s Windows Phone 8 a.k.a Apollo All About?, was published at TechBuzz. That is because Google uses some of the IP rights which are originally patented by Microsoft. So as a result every manufacturer has to pay a certain amount of money to MS for every Android smartphone sold. This is because of the open source nature of the platform; Google clearly has washed its hands off this. Some companies like HTC pay $5 per Android smartphone sold, while others pay slightly more. But Microsoft seems to have raised the stakes considerably now for the South Korean electronics giant Samsung.

If rumors are to be believed, Microsoft is demanding a whopping $15 per Android smartphone sold by Samsung. This apparently is Microsoft’s way of blackmailing Samsung so that they start paying more attention to WP7. HTC has a few WP7 devices under its kitty, hence the concession. It’s hard to believe that a company like MS would resort to something like this. Samsung is said to be negotiating for something under $10 per smartphone. Both the companies have remained mum as of now regarding the matter, so there’s no way of knowing what they’re thinking. With $15 per smartphone, Microsoft could make a lot more than what it makes with WP7. If we add up the sales numbers of the original Galaxy S and the Galaxy S II, Microsoft could make about $195 million. And the sales numbers of the devices are much higher since they are still being sold so it could come down to a lot more than $195 million. You do the math.

[Source]

Stories you may like:

Samsung to launch 4 new Android smartphones for Asian markets

Samsung’s latest entrant in the Galaxy series : The Samsung Galaxy SL GT – I9003

Samsung Galaxy Ace: Official specs available

This article, Microsoft Demanding $15 Per Android Handset From Samsung, was published at TechBuzz. But a video on Youtube, shows the CEO of Nokia, Stephen Elop showing off the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 device codenamed Sea Ray. Well, you might wonder as to why nobody knew about it. Well, this is because Mr Elop asked all the people present to switch off their cameras and recording devices. But one person was recording the whole event as Elop was speaking (thanks to him).

The Sea Ray bears resemblance to the Nokia N9 when seen from the back, which made us feel if Elop was showing off the N9 again. But then Elop pointed out at the camera button on the right side of the phone which isn’t available on the N9, and then turned on the device showing off the first Nokia device running on Windows Phone 7 (greeted by applause). He then left the stage to welcome Jukka Kiiskinen who then demonstrated the features of the Windows Phone 7 with Mango on board of course.

Well, we’re excited about the new Nokia device, but we didn’t quite like the way it was done. The whole purpose of this event is to improve the gaming aspect of Microsoft’s favourite platforms i.e. Windows Phone 7, Xbox and PCs of course. And obviously there are a few things that people expect Microsoft to introduce during this event.

But the title of the seminar which states – ‘Keep Them Coming Back: Downloadable Content on Windows Phone’, has surely gotten a few of us excited. It has been said that the event will focus on “adding downloadable content and microstransactions to your Windows Phone games” which could mean that Microsoft is prepping an in app purchasing system for the platform. Users currently are able to do that via PayPal.

Though this new service seems enticing for the time being, it will be farfetched to say that Microsoft would actually implement this into the WP7 platform. For all we know, the guys at Redmond want us to get excited and are actually referring to Xbox Live here, which will greatly benefit by in app purchasing.

[Source]

Stories you may like:

Windows Phone 7.1 (Mango) To Bring 500 New Features To The Platform [Updated]

Windows Phone 7 Could Soon be the Number Three Mobile Platform

Microsoft To Make Self Branded Windows 8 Tablet?

This article, Microsoft Could Demo In App Purchasing For The WP7 Platform, was published at TechBuzz. And according to new reports, Microsoft could launch a Windows 8 tablet under their own brand name. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Well Microsoft apparently are following in Apple’s footsteps, who manufacture both hardware and software, well the hardware is made by third parties.

Given Microsoft’s hardware requirements for the Windows 8 platform, it could be a bit hard for the manufacturers to keep up, but if Microsoft is responsible for the hardware as well like the software there should be absolutely no problem. Meanwhile, Texas Instruments(TI) has said that its 1.8 GHz OMAP chipset will come with support for Windows 8. Well, with these requirements, Microsoft actually wants the Windows 8 tablets to be the best of the lot. And as we expected, brands have not been that favorable towards Microsoft’s strict rules. Some companies have gone out to say that Microsoft is trying to control the whole process by imposing restrictions on hardware. Microsoft would not want to leave anything uncovered, so the reasons for this are quite justified.

[Source]

Stories you may like:

Windows 8 For Tablets Could Be Demonstrated Next Month

Microsoft Demonstrates the New Windows 8; Inspired Heavily By Metro UI

Microsoft Launches Windows 7 – Its Official folks!

This article, Microsoft To Make Self Branded Windows 8 Tablet?, was published at TechBuzz. The first thing to have grabbed our attention prior to this conference was the report that Microsoft would be launching an OS with touchscreen devices(basically tablets) in mind. Well, that seems to be true in a way with the new Windows 8 being almost the same to both PCs and their smaller touchscreen contemporaries. The not so surprising part is that Windows 8 has borrowed most of its user interface from the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform where the Metro UI is seen. The tiled layout is seen in all its entirety here and that’s no surprise to be honest. Here are a few features of Windows 8:

Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.

Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.

Fluid, natural switching between running apps.

Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.

Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.

Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

“The user interface and new apps will work with or without a keyboard and mouse on a broad range of screen sizes and pixel densities, from small slates to laptops, desktops, all-in-ones, and even classroom-sized displays” – Microsoft added.

And as many would have expected, there is a compatibility clause with Windows 8. With touchscreen tablets being kept in mind, a minimum resolution has been set by Microsoft. Apparently the devices(tablets) need to have a resolution of 1024×769 pixels at least. The best part however is that any Windows application will be compatible with Windows 8, in fact, applications can run side by side which is a welcome sign for the platform. And since we’re talking about hardware requirements here, Windows 8 was demoed running on a notebook with NVIDIA’s quad core Kal-El processor.

Check out the video below for more on this:

[Source]

Stories you may like:

Video: Windows 8 Touch User Interface for Tablets

Windows 8 Welcome Screen Leaked; Looks Pretty Cool

Microsoft Simplifies the PC With Windows 7

This article, Microsoft Demonstrates the New Windows 8; Inspired Heavily By Metro UI, was published at TechBuzz. But Windows seems to have been lost in the wind rather with Honeycomb tablets and iPads making their way to the market. And now, we have a hint at Windows’ re arrival at the tablet industry. It is now being reported that the tablet’s first glimpse could be shown off as early as June. Windows 8‘s leaked UI screenshots have been circulating for quite some time, but nothing was known about the tablet version of Windows 8.

According to a source Microsoft Windows’ Chief, Steven Sinofsky will be giving a demonstration on the new Windows 8 OS for tablets at the All Things Digital D9 conference which is to be held in June. It is expected that Windows 8′s tablet version would feature live tiles much like the Windows Phone 7 platform. Microsoft has some serious catching up to do with their tablet OS. With already established operating systems like iOS, Android, webOS and QNX it should be quite hard for Microsoft to get right back on top. But well, it’s not actually about getting back on top but it’s about giving users what they want. Windows 8′s beta version is supposed to be revealed in September with the first tablet featuring Windows 8 to be launched in 2012.

Stories you may like:

Video: Windows 8 Touch User Interface for Tablets

HTC to roll out 3 new tablets

More Details Emerge on Windows 7

This article, Windows 8 For Tablets Could Be Demonstrated Next Month, was published at TechBuzz. And the said flaw is supposed to be rectified and taken care of with the OS’ Mango update (a.k.a Windows Phone 7.1) which will include a lot of other features, well 500 of them as said by Steve Ballmer himself. He revealed this info while speaking at the Japanese Microsoft Developer Forum 2011. Microsoft will announce the Mango update tomorrow at the Windows Phone 7 VIP preview event.

The new features will considerably improve performance on the platform. The features include multi tasking support for third party apps, Office 365 and SkyDrive support, ability to add custom ringtones, new mobile app of Microsoft Lync, inclusion of IE9 Mobile, a slightly revamped Marketplace, over 1500 new APIs and support for more languages to name a few.

Interestingly, sources suggest that 9 new Windows Phone 7 handsets are to be unveiled/revealed tomorrow at the Windows Phone 7 VIP preview. This VIP event is said to include the unveiling of WP7 running devices from four different brands which include 4 from Samsung, 2 each from HTC and Acer and 1 from Dell. The list includes the 16 MP camera possessing HTC Bresson which we wrote about more than a month ago and also Dell‘s full QWERTY keyboard handset the Wrigley. Frankly we are quite confused as to what to get excited about. So is the case with iOS and other platforms. Symbian’s market share however has been diminishing slowly. But that’s not what we’re talking about today. Instead, we’ll look into Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7, which has managed to do quite well this past quarter. Gartner has given out the market share details of major Operating Systems across the globe, though the numbers haven’t been confirmed by the companies themselves.

In Q1 of 2011, 1.6 million WP7 phones were sold which is a very good number considering the rather simple and mediocre reviews that WP7 has received so far mainly due to lack of key features and inconsistency with OS updates. Of course, for now there is no comparing WP7 with the likes of Android and iOS, but who knows what the future holds for us? Recent surveys suggested that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 could soon overtake RIM’s BlackBerry to be the number three mobile platform in the world. Given Microsoft’s latest partnership with Nokia, we will be seeing Nokia manufactured WP7 phones from 2012. And looking at Nokia’s wide reach in Asia and Africa, we think this tie up could go a long way in boosting WP7′s market share.

Stories you may like:

Windows Phone 7 Could Soon be the Number Three Mobile Platform

Nokia to Launch 40 New Phones in 2011; No WP7 phone till 2012

Over 100 Million S60 Devices Shipped by Nokia

This article, 1.6 Million Windows Phone 7 Handsets Sold During The First Quarter of 2011, was published at TechBuzz. This error also has a ripple effect with Outlook, which stops syncing and also drains the battery faster than usual.

Solution: Windows Phone might be taking up “Reserved Space” which is not displayed in About info. Reserved Space leaves no room for the operating system to cache files, forcing it to write too much information to memory too often, and hence the battery drains out. Ironically, the fix to this problem lies within Zune App on your computer, and not from your Phone’s settings.

Open Zune App > Settings > Phone > Reserved Space, and if your phone is taking too much Reserved Space, just reduce it a little to provide enough room for your phone’s operating system to cache files. If this doesn’t solve your problem, just check for new updates for Windows Phone 7. It can also be a bug with the operating system itself. As a last resort, you may also reformatting your device from Settings > About > Reset or Press and hold Volume Down + Power + Camera Button together. Let us know what works for you!

Stories you may like:

Gmail Increases Storage Space for all

Lycos Offers new E-mail Service with 3GB Storage Space.

Microsoft SkyDrive Bumps up Storage to 25GB

This article, Fix “Low on Storage Space” Error on WP7, was published at TechBuzz. Not like they don’t use PCs anymore, but somehow there is a shift. People who are obsessive about tech choose to buy Mac, over a Windows PC. Not just in Silicon Valley, but even here in India. Microsoft and Skype haven’t official expressed anything about the acquisition deal, but the report seems to be quite credible and the agreement might be announced as early as tomorrow.

Although $8.5 billion ain’t cheap, Microsoft could benefit from the brand value attached with Skype, especially at a time when Microsoft is struggling to pull in consumers. If the deal does through, it would be the biggest acquisition in the history of Microsoft. (three years ago, Microsoft offered to acquire Yahoo! for $44.6 billion, and Yahoo! turned it down claiming it undervalues them. Today, Yahoo! is valued at $22.24 billion)

Skype enables millions of users to make voice calls to traditional phones, mobile and chat over the Internet. Corporates have also embraced Skype for video conferencing and file transfer. Most of Microsoft’s revenues comes from Windows and Office software, and rivals such as Google and Apple have exerted considerable pressure with Android, iOS eating Microsoft’s market-share month after month. Buying Skype would definitively help Microsoft stay in the ‘game’.

Update: It’s now confirmed! Microsoft is indeed buying Skype for $8 Billion. The rumors took more shape when Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer made an appearance at the BlackBerry World to launch Bing Maps for BlackBerry. In the same conference RIM announced the BlackBerry OS 7.0 which was previously known as Blackberry OS 6.1 and also launched two new handsets. A recent survey stated that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 could soon overtake RIM’s BlackBerry to become the number three mobile platform.

Director of mobile research at Park Associates, Harry Wang said – “There’s a 50 percent probability that, in about two years, Microsoft will make a big and bold more to acquire large hardware vendors. RIM will be the best target because it has a user base that Microsoft is looking for: enterprise customers. And they are in the key, fast-growing area that Microsoft isn’t very successful at yet, the mobile world. The need for Microsoft is so urgent in mobile, yet RIM is a perfect entry.”

Well, this is still an approximation of what could happen in the span of 2 years or more. But if RIM manages to get itself up from the crisis it’s going through, we would not have to see this happen. But either way, considering Microsoft’s financial power, it shouldn’t be a bad idea to buy out RIM if its face value drops considerably.

Stories you may like:

Microsoft is still willing to acquire Yahoo!

Windows Phone 7 Could Soon be the Number Three Mobile Platform

Yahoo! to reject Microsoft’s Bid to Acquire

This article, Microsoft Could Acquire RIM in the Near Future, was published at TechBuzz. This means that BlackBerry OS devices will get Bing search and maps with voice search and more by default. This however could also mean that RIM has a new BlackBerry OS planned for this year. Perhaps we could see a QNX based OS before the end of this calendar year. We’re hoping for the best.

BlackBerry is certainly not having a good time compared to other OS’. This could just be what they wanted. Yesterday they let out a shocker by saying that the BlackBerry OS 7 would not be supported on older devices. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in the end. Windows XP users won’t be receiving the update due to the fact that XP doesn’t support the hardware acceleration required by Internet Explorer 9 to speed things up.

This is certainly good news for developers because Internet Explorer 9 is better than its predecessor in terms of adhering to web standards, and supports HTML5 + CSS3 with the goodness of hardware acceleration. Automatic updates means scores of Small businesses, Enterprise and non-technical users will receive the update, giving the browser a significant push in terms of browser share vs. Firefox and Chrome.

Microsoft is going slow with the roll out, and they expect the roll out to complete by the end of June, 2011. Users should see Internet Explorer 9 as a non-critical important update listed in Windows Update on their computers, and they can choose to receive the update. Webmasters should see a significant bump in their browser statistics in months to come.

Stories you may like:

No More WGA Validation Required for Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer 8 under Private Beta

Microsoft Hints About Internet Explorer 8

This article, Internet Explorer 9 Available Through Windows Update, was published at TechBuzz. But even after having a greater quarterly revenue than Microsoft, Apple was still behind Microsoft in terms of quarterly profits. This was mainly due to the high profit margin with Microsoft’s products and software compared to Apple. But now all that seems to have changed after Microsoft announced its net profits for the first calendar quarter of this year.

Microsoft generated a net profit of $5.23 billion whereas Apple’s net profit was valued at about $5.99 billion. This is really an achievement in itself considering the low profit margin Apple sells its hardware for. Apple was able to achieve this feat with the rising sales of the iPhone and the huge demand for the iPad. Some analysts even predict Apple to be the first ever trillion dollar company. Interestingly, Apple had surpassed Microsoft in terms of market capitalisation, having over $100 billion higher than Microsoft. Maybe Microsoft should start thinking about developing a tablet PC sooner rather than later.

Stories you may like:

Apple Dethrones Nokia as the World’s Largest Cellphone Company

iPhone Responsible for 50% of Apple’s Revenue

Microsoft Acquires aQuantive Ad Network for $6 billion

This article, Apple Beats Microsoft in Terms of Net Profits For the First Time Ever, was published at TechBuzz. But what about the other OS’? We’re talking about the BlackBerry OS and WP7 here. According to the participants at AppNation, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 will soon overtake BlackBerry to become the number three mobile platform in the world. AppNation is a union of developers, app marketers, CPU manufacturers, carrier officials and other notable personalities. According to the reps present, BlackBerry is going down and will be almost unrecoverable. Microsoft on the other hand can rather purchase developers and also distribution considering the company’s heavy financing opportunities. And with Nokia’s decision to take up Windows Phone 7 as its primary platform, things could only get better for Microsoft.

The developers on the other hand are considering writing apps for WP7 instead of BlackBerry OS, so that’s one way of telling us what they think about BlackBerry. And interestingly enough when the participants were asked where they see the BlackBerry OS in 2015, they responded with a striking silence. This could be just what Microsoft wanted to hear, but we think there’s still some time left for BlackBerry. And if RIM doesn’t take necessary steps to revamp the whole OS, things could certainly go like the folks at AppNation have predicted.

Stories you may like:

Android market Place hits 225,000 mark

Mobile Malware That Can Remotely Control Your Android Phone

Live Search with Speech Recognition for Windows Mobile

This article, Windows Phone 7 Could Soon be the Number Three Mobile Platform, was published at TechBuzz. Well, not exactly an add-on, but a game for Office 2007 and Office 2010 aimed at improving your abilities and making you more productive at using Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. It provided challenges that users may encounter on a day to day basis while using Office application and scores you based on your performance and efficiency.

Ribbon Hero 2 improves on that concept with new cartoon style interface and different story line for Clippy (yes that annoying little clip which offered help in older versions of Office applications). The story begins with Bill Gates firing clippy. Poor clippy was forced to be homeless after his mom threw him out of their basement. With no option but to find a new job, clippy goes on a job hunt.

The game also encourages you to share your score with your friends on Facebook. Ribbon Hero 2 works only on Windows for Office 2007, 2010. Office 2011 for Mac users need to wait longer, perhaps for Ribbon Hero 3 to arrive? We are not sure on that either! As expected, new details have started emerging. This new video shows the usability of Windows 8 on touch screen enabled devices such as tablets. This video leaked by @robyroby27 demonstrates Microsoft’s new immersive user experience based around Metro UI which will power prospective ARM-based tablets.

Icons and controls have been sized up to enable smooth finger tap controls without accidentally tapping in the wrong area of the screen. It would be wrong to comment on the UI based on YouTube video, but it seems like the screen resolution is small and perhaps that’s why the reason why scrollbar appears to see more panels. Nevertheless, the Metro UI looks fabulous, and people are expecting nothing but the best from Microsoft’s immersive user experience.

Microsoft is also reported to be working on a new API codenamed ‘Jupiter’ which will allow developers to use Silverlight and create application packaged in .appx extension. The applications will be a part of Windows 8 through an app store. We’ll keep our fingers crossed till Windows Developers Conference in September this year.

Stories you may like:

iPhone-like Touch Feature on Windows 7?

Microsoft Kinect Might Be Used to Detect Human Movements in Windows 8

Windows 8 Welcome Screen Leaked; Looks Pretty Cool

This article, Video: Windows 8 Touch User Interface for Tablets, was published at TechBuzz.
