There’s the ability to drag and drop files as well, and the syncing occurs rather quickly. On Macs, SkyDrive files can be accessed directly on the finder, so that’s something. We love how Microsoft is making changes to SkyDrive to make it more competitive. We have Google Drive on the horizon as well, so things can get a little interesting in the coming days.

And as expected, Microsoft has reduced the free SkyDrive storage for new users to 7GB, down from 25GB. The existing users have nothing to worry about though. According to Microsoft about 99.94% of the existing/old users still use less than 7GB of storage, so they can either opt out of the 25GB free storage or apply to get the full 25GB of storage as promised. Remember this particular perk is only for existing SkyDrive users and any new user will still get only 7GB of storage. And as we mentioned yesterday, extra storage will set you back by a few bucks, $10, $25 and $50 for 20, 50 and 100GB of more storage.

Don’t have a SkyDrive account yet? Maybe it’s time to get one because it is being rumored that Microsoft is going to change the scheme of things with SkyDrive. It is believed that the company will limit free storage to 7GB from 25GB. As for the existing users, there’s no need to worry as your 25GB free storage will remain the same. It is being rumored that Microsoft is thinking of introducing paid storage plans much like DropBox or any other cloud service. If rumors are to be believed, the prices for 20, 50 and 100GB of extra storage will be $10, $25, $50.

It is also said that Microsoft will introduce a Windows 7 desktop app of SkyDrive. This new application is said to be hosted on apps.live.com. Microsoft is believed to shed light on its plans at the upcoming The Next Web Conference this coming Friday (27^th April). This news comes as Google also plans to launch its own cloud based service. Google Drive is said to come with 5GB of online storage while Microsoft still has an advantage with 7GB (down from 25GB). To be fair, 25GB seemed a little too generous. So it seems like DropBox has some tough competition from the bigwigs.

If you’re a Windows Phone user, you would know the advantage and benefits of the cool SkyDrive app. Native integration aside, Windows Phone users are offered 25GB of free storage which is a lot given how other competitors offer merely 5GB of free storage. This cool app has now been updated to version 2.0 which brings a neat new UI and a few other features to make things a little smoother and better.

The addition of a new multi select tool makes life easier for the users willing to move files to a new location or delete multiple items. This is something that I wish the WP7 platform had in the Pictures app. Moving on, the UI has seen a slight revamp with the fluidity being increased considerably.

Also, the ability to change permissions for folders within the app is a great addition to the app. You can change public folders into private and share it with friends if necessary. Download the app from the Windows Phone Marketplace, or if you already have it installed, check for an update.

Microsoft has just announced its Q3 results (for the quarter ended March 31, 2012). Some growth is noticeable with revenue of $17.41 billion this past quarter which as compared to Q2 is a growth of 6%. The company also saw a slight increase in the operating income which has risen by 12%. The net income however was slightly lesser this time around. The entertainment division in particular had disappointing numbers with the division seeing a decrease of 16% compared to the previous quarter (revenue of $1.62 billion). The company blames the “soft gaming console market” for the numbers.

The CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer said – “We’re driving toward exciting launches across the entire company, while delivering strong financial results. With the upcoming release of new Windows 8 PCs and tablets, the next version of Office, and a wide array of products and services for the enterprise and consumers, we will be delivering exceptional value to all our customers in the year ahead.”

The company mentioned in the press release, that Windows (PC) and Windows Live division saw a growth of 4%. Windows 7 apparently, still has sufficient demand even with the inevitable launch of Windows 8. Windows Phones are still slowly picking up though, but we figure that with the arrival of Windows Phone 8, things could change. Microsoft is also looking forward to the launch of Office 15, Windows 8, SQL Server 12, Windows Server 12, so the company hopes to turn the tables in the current quarter.

The Acer Allegro

We haven’t seen a lot of Windows Phone devices with a physical QWERTY keyboard. We could see one from Acer pretty soon though. Windows Phone 8 is said to bring forth a bundle of changes, including improved OEM support for slide out QWERTY keyboards. The handset, tipped to be the Acer W11 is slated to be announced in September with a launch believed to happen in October. Acer already has a WP7 smartphone in its kitty with the Acer Allegro, and this would sit pretty well in its lineup.

Assuming that the new W11 is real, it will be interesting to watch how the market responds to it. A Nokia WP8 QWERTY smartphone has also been rumored, so the trend could change considerably in the Windows Phone arena. Sadly, this is all we know about the device for now. But we hope to get a clearer pattern as the days progress. It seems to me that lesser known mobile manufacturers like Acer want to get into the mix. With the Allegro being the only WP7 smartphone to its credit, we’re certain that there would be a lot more in the future. As for the W11, make sure to take it with a pinch of salt since none of this is confirmed.

If reports are to be believed, Samsung will not roll out Windows Phone smartphones anymore until Windows Phone 8 arrives. It is said that Samsung wants to produce high end Windows Phone devices, but would wait till WP8 arrives instead of working around Windows Phone 7.5. Previously, it was believed that Samsung was looking to launch a Windows Phone Tango device when the OS was made available. According to Taiwan’s ePrice, the company wants to go big with Windows Phone 8 (Apollo). Samsung apparently is of the opinion that Windows Phone 7.5 doesn’t quite help with the company’s plans to roll out only high end devices.

This however doesn’t rule out the possibility of the company making a budget ranged Windows Phone (with Tango). It is was rumored before that Samsung will roll out three new Windows Phone devices this year among which two will feature Windows Phone 8. So the idea of a Tango smartphone does make sense. Since the news is generating from Samsung Taiwan, it’s hard to speculate if this news pertains to the entire world. But the company in general hasn’t had a lot of luck with the Windows Phone smartphones (globally), so it seems wise to wait for the next major OS refresh after Tango.

The Nokia Lumia 900 is apparently plagued by an internet connectivity bug, which is believed to have caused a lull in its sales as we mentioned yesterday. But now, contrasting reports are coming through suggesting otherwise. The Lumia 900 currently tops Amazon’s list of best sellers. With the Black and Cyan variants sticking at position 1 and 2 respectively, it seems like the smartphone is doing well in the States after all. Following the Lumia 900 are smartphones like the Motorola Droid 3, HTC Rezound etc.

It seems like the massive marketing campaign has worked out well for Nokia. Couple that with the fact that the handset is being offered for a great bargain. So it’s basically a steal for the buyers. It is hard to tell if the smartphone will be able to stand up against droids like the HTC One XL when it makes its way to the stores eventually.

The actual sales numbers of the Lumia 900 are not known yet, but it does seem like a good start. AT&T has mentioned that the Lumia has “exceeded” its expectations, but until the numbers are made public, we remain skeptical. As for the internet connection bug on the smartphone, Nokia has mentioned that it was spotted only in a handful of Lumia 900 smartphones and that a fix will be rolled out on Monday (April 16). But if the users can’t wait until then, they can head over to the nearest AT&T store to get it replaced.

The upcoming Windows 8 plaform has a lot in store for us, with the Metro UI being its prominent feature. Developers have designed the apps for the new desktop operating system keeping that in mind. So most apps on Windows 8 will work around the Metro architecture of the platform. And since Microsoft has made the OS (Consumer Preview) available to all via MSDN, people are free to try it and run some vital third party applications.

And some users thought it would be fun to check out the rather unfinished version of Mozilla Firefox on Windows 8. It must be noted that the app is still under construction and since Windows 8 isn’t ready for the market yet, Mozilla has ample time to make some changes accordingly. The app however isn’t that bad and the UI is very reminiscent of the Android version of Firefox which is pretty good on its own.

Needless to say, Mozilla Corp would want to revamp the whole thing before Windows 8 is ready for the market. Mozilla apparently aims to have a fully functional version of Firefox for Windows 8 before the end of Q2 2012. Well I haven’t used it myself personally, so it would be hard to comment on the fluidity of the browser, but it is being said that it comes with just about the same settings and preferences as the regular desktop versions of Firefox. So the Valentine’s Day is upon us and there’s going to be a lot of offers being showered on us from all walks of life and some cheesy or rather cliché things happening in the background. But here’s something that takes the cake. Well, Nokia recently struck a long overdue partnership with AT&T to start selling the newly announced Lumia 900 (due in March) in the North American markets. And as a token of appreciation, the company has sent out a rather strange/weird letter addressing the company. It’s kind of like a love letter from Nokia to the carrier.

Well, as cheesy as it sounds, we can see the sense of humor in this. Some even thought that the Lumia 900 would be announced earlier than expected, on Valentine’s Day. But that doesn’t seem to be case with this merely being a publicity stunt by the company. With people’s attention on the said handset now, more users could line up to get the handset. Sadly though, Microsoft has ended pre orders for the Lumia 900 last week. So people might have to wait until it hits stores officially, and pick one up from there. The Lumia 900 is also a 4G capable phone which will run on AT&T’s 4G networks, so that’s something to look forward to as well. With words like “magic happens” and “memories” straight out of Nokia’s new marketing vocabulary, we wonder if there’s anything that could top this gimmick.

Windows 8 developer preview has been available via MSDN since a while now. This version is targeted towards the developers to build applications around the OS and also find bugs if any. But thanks to Microsoft, even a common user can download the update and install it on his desktop. But Microsoft plans to roll out a Consumer Preview of the much awaited desktop platform at the Mobile World Congress late this month. This comes as great news for the users who were waiting for a simplified version of the OS in the wild. Users will also be able to download an array of applications from the Windows Store. Microsoft is that much closer to bringing together both the desktop and mobile platforms. But there’s no doubt that it still needs substantial amount of work.

It’s rather strange that Microsoft picked a mobile conference to reveal the consumer preview, but this as the source rightly suggests could mean that Microsoft is intending to reveal a lot more than just the consumer preview. Microsoft showed off the tablet and desktop interface of Windows 8 in June last year and it is high time that we saw something in action. Not only will Microsoft reveal the Consumer Preview of Windows 8, but also reveal some Metro applications suited for the Windows 8 experience. MS will also show off the improvements/upgrades in terms of hardware input (keyboard and mouse) as well as software (start menu changes etc). The announcement will be made on Feb 29^th between 3 to 5PM CET (Central European Time).

With info about the Windows Phone 8 platform being leaked yesterday, there have been numerous speculation by users and critics alike. It seems like Microsoft wants to bring together the desktop operating system ( Windows 8 ) with the tablet and smartphone operating system. This is a great move which could go a long way in bringing forth deep integration with Windows PCs. Secondly, the ability for higher screen resolutions and the compatibility with dual core processors make it a worthy upgrade. The fact that Microsoft’s Metro UI will be seen across all Windows platforms is a welcome sign. Whoever has used a Windows Phone will know what we are talking about.

Speaking of the mobile platform, Windows Phone 8 or more popularly known as Windows Phone Apollo will not break cover until the end of the year at least. And that’s just a rough approximation, meaning that the launch date could be further delayed. We believe that the new platform (as we know it) has the potential to make an impact in the mobile industry. But there’s still one major update left before Microsoft even considers rolling out Apollo, yes we’re talking about Tango. Tango is Microsoft’s way of hitting into the low end and mid range market segment with smartphones that do not require fancy specifications. The update is also said to bring the much awaited Skype support for Windows Phones. Ironically, Skype (recently acquired by Microsoft) is available across most mobile platforms except on Windows Phones. The future looks very bright for Microsoft and even though the current market share of Windows Phones is not as much as the company would have liked to have by now, we believe things could change in the future.

Well, it’s not new info that Microsoft earns a hefty sum of money with every Android handset sold. That is because Google uses some of the IP rights which are originally patented by Microsoft. So as a result every manufacturer has to pay a certain amount of money to MS for every Android smartphone sold. This is because of the open source nature of the platform; Google clearly has washed its hands off this. Some companies like HTC pay $5 per Android smartphone sold, while others pay slightly more. But Microsoft seems to have raised the stakes considerably now for the South Korean electronics giant Samsung.

If rumors are to be believed, Microsoft is demanding a whopping $15 per Android smartphone sold by Samsung. This apparently is Microsoft’s way of blackmailing Samsung so that they start paying more attention to WP7. HTC has a few WP7 devices under its kitty, hence the concession. It’s hard to believe that a company like MS would resort to something like this. Samsung is said to be negotiating for something under $10 per smartphone. Both the companies have remained mum as of now regarding the matter, so there’s no way of knowing what they’re thinking. With $15 per smartphone, Microsoft could make a lot more than what it makes with WP7. If we add up the sales numbers of the original Galaxy S and the Galaxy S II, Microsoft could make about $195 million. And the sales numbers of the devices are much higher since they are still being sold so it could come down to a lot more than $195 million. You do the math.

The Sea Ray bears resemblance to the Nokia N9 when seen from the back, which made us feel if Elop was showing off the N9 again. But then Elop pointed out at the camera button on the right side of the phone which isn’t available on the N9, and then turned on the device showing off the first Nokia device running on Windows Phone 7 (greeted by applause). He then left the stage to welcome Jukka Kiiskinen who then demonstrated the features of the Windows Phone 7 with Mango on board of course.

The Microsoft Gamefest will be held in Seattle, Tokyo and Seattle from July onwards. The whole purpose of this event is to improve the gaming aspect of Microsoft’s favourite platforms i.e. Windows Phone 7, Xbox and PCs of course. And obviously there are a few things that people expect Microsoft to introduce during this event.

But the title of the seminar which states – ‘Keep Them Coming Back: Downloadable Content on Windows Phone’, has surely gotten a few of us excited. It has been said that the event will focus on “adding downloadable content and microstransactions to your Windows Phone games” which could mean that Microsoft is prepping an in app purchasing system for the platform. Users currently are able to do that via PayPal.

Though this new service seems enticing for the time being, it will be farfetched to say that Microsoft would actually implement this into the WP7 platform. For all we know, the guys at Redmond want us to get excited and are actually referring to Xbox Live here, which will greatly benefit by in app purchasing.

After the recent announcement of the Windows 8 platform, talks have begun as to who would manufacture the first tablet based on the OS. And according to new reports, Microsoft could launch a Windows 8 tablet under their own brand name. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Well Microsoft apparently are following in Apple’s footsteps, who manufacture both hardware and software, well the hardware is made by third parties.

Given Microsoft’s hardware requirements for the Windows 8 platform, it could be a bit hard for the manufacturers to keep up, but if Microsoft is responsible for the hardware as well like the software there should be absolutely no problem. Meanwhile, Texas Instruments(TI) has said that its 1.8 GHz OMAP chipset will come with support for Windows 8. Well, with these requirements, Microsoft actually wants the Windows 8 tablets to be the best of the lot. And as we expected, brands have not been that favorable towards Microsoft’s strict rules. Some companies have gone out to say that Microsoft is trying to control the whole process by imposing restrictions on hardware. Microsoft would not want to leave anything uncovered, so the reasons for this are quite justified.

Microsoft today unveiled the highly anticipated Windows 8 operating system both at the Computex 2011 Expo in Taipei and the All Things Digital D9 conference in California. The first thing to have grabbed our attention prior to this conference was the report that Microsoft would be launching an OS with touchscreen devices(basically tablets) in mind. Well, that seems to be true in a way with the new Windows 8 being almost the same to both PCs and their smaller touchscreen contemporaries. The not so surprising part is that Windows 8 has borrowed most of its user interface from the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform where the Metro UI is seen. The tiled layout is seen in all its entirety here and that’s no surprise to be honest. Here are a few features of Windows 8:

• Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.
• Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.
• Fluid, natural switching between running apps.
• Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.
• Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.
• Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.

“The user interface and new apps will work with or without a keyboard and mouse on a broad range of screen sizes and pixel densities, from small slates to laptops, desktops, all-in-ones, and even classroom-sized displays” – Microsoft added.

And as many would have expected, there is a compatibility clause with Windows 8. With touchscreen tablets being kept in mind, a minimum resolution has been set by Microsoft. Apparently the devices(tablets) need to have a resolution of 1024×769 pixels at least. The best part however is that any Windows application will be compatible with Windows 8, in fact, applications can run side by side which is a welcome sign for the platform.And since we’re talking about hardware requirements here, Windows 8 was demoed running on a notebook with NVIDIA’s quad core Kal-El processor.

Almost every major electronics brand now has a tablet of its own, mostly Android based. But Windows seems to have been lost in the wind rather with Honeycomb tablets and iPads making their way to the market. And now, we have a hint at Windows’ re arrival at the tablet industry. It is now being reported that the tablet’s first glimpse could be shown off as early as June. Windows 8‘s leaked UI screenshots have been circulating for quite some time, but nothing was known about the tablet version of Windows 8.

According to a source Microsoft Windows’ Chief, Steven Sinofsky will be giving a demonstration on the new Windows 8 OS for tablets at the All Things Digital D9 conference which is to be held in June. It is expected that Windows 8′s tablet version would feature live tiles much like the Windows Phone 7 platform. Microsoft has some serious catching up to do with their tablet OS. With already established operating systems like iOS, Android, webOS and QNX it should be quite hard for Microsoft to get right back on top. But well, it’s not actually about getting back on top but it’s about giving users what they want. Windows 8′s beta version is supposed to be revealed in September with the first tablet featuring Windows 8 to be launched in 2012.

Windows Phone 7 has been subject to severe scrutiny by all for its lack of essential features that one expects to see on a smartphone, we’re talking about multitasking here. And the said flaw is supposed to be rectified and taken care of with the OS’ Mango update (a.k.a Windows Phone 7.1) which will include a lot of other features, well 500 of them as said by Steve Ballmer himself. He revealed this info while speaking at the Japanese Microsoft Developer Forum 2011. Microsoft will announce the Mango update tomorrow at the Windows Phone 7 VIP preview event.

The new features will considerably improve performance on the platform. The features include multi tasking support for third party apps, Office 365 and SkyDrive support, ability to add custom ringtones, new mobile app of Microsoft Lync, inclusion of IE9 Mobile, a slightly revamped Marketplace, over 1500 new APIs and support for more languages to name a few.

Interestingly, sources suggest that 9 new Windows Phone 7  handsets are to be unveiled/revealed tomorrow at the Windows Phone 7 VIP preview. This VIP event is said to include the unveiling of WP7 running devices from four different brands which include 4 from Samsung, 2 each from HTC and Acer and 1 from Dell. The list includes the 16 MP camera possessing HTC Bresson which we wrote about more than a month ago and also Dell‘s full QWERTY keyboard handset the Wrigley. Frankly we are quite confused as to what to get excited about. The launch of 9 new WP7 handsets is something that we’ll be closely looking at though.

In Q1 of 2011, 1.6 million WP7 phones were sold which is a very good number considering the rather simple and mediocre reviews that WP7 has received so far mainly due to lack of key features and inconsistency with OS updates. Of course, for now there is no comparing WP7 with the likes of Android and iOS, but who knows what the future holds for us? Recent surveys suggested that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 could soon overtake RIM’s BlackBerry to be the number three mobile platform in the world. Given Microsoft’s latest partnership with Nokia, we will be seeing Nokia manufactured WP7 phones from 2012. And looking at Nokia’s wide reach in Asia and Africa, we think this tie up could go a long way in boosting WP7′s market share.

Windows Phone 7 sometimes gives a weird “Low on Storage Space” error message, even when there is enough free storage space in your phone. This error also has a ripple effect with Outlook, which stops syncing and also drains the battery faster than usual.

Open Zune App > Settings > Phone > Reserved Space, and if your phone is taking too much Reserved Space, just reduce it a little to provide enough room for your phone’s operating system to cache files. If this doesn’t solve your problem, just check for new updates for Windows Phone 7. It can also be a bug with the operating system itself. As a last resort, you may also reformatting your device from Settings > About > Reset or Press and hold Volume Down + Power + Camera Button together. Let us know what works for you!
