Microsoft has finally launched a SkyDrive app for Mac OS X Lion and Windows desktops. The app was made available some hours ago and it seems to work flawlessly on both Windows and Mac computers. The app is very similar to DropBox as all the files are contained in one universal folder.

There’s the ability to drag and drop files as well, and the syncing occurs rather quickly. On Macs, SkyDrive files can be accessed directly on the finder, so that’s something. We love how Microsoft is making changes to SkyDrive to make it more competitive. We have Google Drive on the horizon as well, so things can get a little interesting in the coming days.

And as expected, Microsoft has reduced the free SkyDrive storage for new users to 7GB, down from 25GB. The existing users have nothing to worry about though. According to Microsoft about 99.94% of the existing/old users still use less than 7GB of storage, so they can either opt out of the 25GB free storage or apply to get the full 25GB of storage as promised. Remember this particular perk is only for existing SkyDrive users and any new user will still get only 7GB of storage. And as we mentioned yesterday, extra storage will set you back by a few bucks, $10, $25 and $50 for 20, 50 and 100GB of more storage.

Existing users who want to keep the 25GB free storage can head over to this link.

Download SkyDrive for Windows and Mac OS X Lion.

[Via]

Stories you may like:

Microsoft To Introduce Paid SkyDrive Storage

Microsoft SkyDrive Bumps up Storage to 25GB

SkyDrive For Windows Phone Updated To Version 2.0

This article, SkyDrive Apps For Mac And Windows Desktops Released, was published at TechBuzz. But applications usually store more information elsewhere on the hard drive, most notably they store some preferences and they can also store support files in the library folder. To completely delete a program from your Mac you have to find these files and remove them.

Look for Left Over Files

The first place you have to look for leftover files after you uninstalled the program is the Library folder contained in your user folder. Here, the files you are looking for will most likely be in the Application Support folder. After you spot the files you drag them to the thrash can as well. Now we have to do the same for the Library folder on the system level and also check the Application Support folder of other users that may be using the machine.

Remove Program Preferences

Next, in the user Library folder, we will find a Preferences folder. Here we are going to find only files that retained small amounts of information like the positioning you liked for your windows or what the options for the program were, so chances are you probably skipped this step if all you were after was freeing up some hard drive space.

Now look for files with names that somehow match the application you deleted and remove them also. However, some applications go beyond this and create folders containing many files so you want to search for these also and remove them completely. If you created an alias to the application anywhere you want to get rid of that as well. You can do a search for the application and it will usually come up with any other aliases or maybe some extra file somewhere that you didn’t find.

You can also use spotlight to search for documents created by the application. If it was a standard type of application like a word processor you probably wouldn’t want to get rid of your documents but if it was a very specific type of application like a game that created a certain type of files you might want to search for that type of game files.

You might find that you have some in your documents folder that you no longer want around so you can delete those as well. If you don’t want to go through all this trouble yourself there are many freeware applications that will allow you to do this very quickly and easy.

This guest post is by David Ritchie. Firstly the announcement of iOS 5 as we had all expected, plus details about Mac OS X Lion and iCloud. The addition of a few handy elements on iOS 5 is the highlight of the event. Apple first demonstrated the Mac OS X Lion, followed by iOS 5(10 features demoed out of 200), Safari and iCloud.

Lion will be bringing with it over 250 new features. Multi touch gesture controls is found in most Macbooks, so Apple has decided to build it into the OS. Apple then demoed the Mac App Store and other new features that come with Lion.

iOS :

First off, Apple’s notifications system has been rather disappointing to say the least. Well, Apple is planning to change that with a single spot with all your important notifications displayed in a bar like layout called the “Notification Center”. Users will have to scroll their finger from top to bottom. Apple has also improved the Twitter integration with a single sign on. For every application that you download from the App Store, you will have to confirm your Twitter credentials and not log in with your username and password all over again, basically a time saving feature. And Apple has integrated deeply with Twitter this time, with the ability to share read articles on Safari, or share pictures from your gallery and camera as well. With iOS 5 Apple will be introducing the “Split Keyboard” feature which is basically a easy to use keyboard with which you can type using your thumbs. Also, all the update on iOS 5 will now be provided over the air (OTA). The iOS 5 will be made available this fall and will be compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1 and 2 and iPod Touch devices 3rd Gen and above.

Safari:

Apple has improved the user experience with the default iOS browser (Safari) by implementing the “Reader” feature as seen on the desktop version of the browser. Also enabled is the “Reading List” feature, wherein you can save an article on the web and read it later at your leisure and convenience and it seamlessly syncs with Macs, Windows Desktops and iOS devices. Tabbed Browsing is also enabled on Safari for iOS 5 (finally). Users can now easily switch between tabs without having waste much time. Of course, one could switch to a window on iOS 4, but here all the tabs will be clearly visible on top.

Camera:

The basic iOS camera will be subject to some enhancements, mostly functionality based. You can now access the camera with a shortcut button in the lock screen. Irrespective of your phone’s security pass code availability, pressing the button will let you take a few snaps. Users can also take snaps by pressing the volume up button on the device and pinch to zoom function now available when taking snaps as well. Enhancement features are taken care of with a one click access to the iPhoto app to edit and give the picture your personal touch.

iMessage:

A feature known as iMessage will be launched which will be a competitor to the well established BlackBerry Messenger. This basically would connect with all your iOS 5 devices, which basically means that you can start typing a message and start again from where you left with your iPad or the iPod Touch. You can also click pictures and share it in iMessage, not just text. Works over 3G and WiFi

iCloud:

iCloud as we all know is cloud based storage service, and this time Apple has taken the cloud service a step further. By seamlessly integrating it with all iOS devices. Say you have an iPad and you upload a file. Say you add a new file, the iCloud service basically pushes it to all your devices (wire-free). Similarly, you can sync your mail, calendar and contacts on iCloud. The best part however is that the iCloud service will be provided by Apple for free. The iCloud Storage APIs will also be launched for the developers, which is pretty good news for the devs. iCloud also includes, “Photo Stream” which saves all your photos to the cloud without having to manually do it, cool eh? And the auto upload will be carried out to Macs as well. And lastly the “iTunes in the Cloud” feature, this basically will send all the newly purchased music to the cloud and other iOS devices that you have, free of cost. For a user to activate the iCloud feature, all he has to do is login with his Apple ID and that’s it, you’ll be good to go. But users will have to wait till Fall for the iOS 5 to be finally released.

And that’s about it. We might have missed a few new features, so let us know about it in the comments section below.

Stories you may like:

Apple to Show Off iOS 5, iCloud and More At WWDC

Not Apple TV – Apple TV experience in your browser

WWDC: iPhone 3G with GPS Launches on July 11th

This article, Apple WWDC 2011 Announcements: Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, iCloud and More, was published at TechBuzz. And now Apple has confirmed that they will indeed be unveiling the iOS 5 and the cloud based music service named iCloud at the WWDC on June 6. Along with iOS 5 and iCloud, Apple will also be demonstrating the Mac OS 10.7 Lion. And what’s better is that CEO, Steve Jobs himself will present the keynote address accompanied by other Apple execs and officials at 10 AM on June 6th.

We love the fact that Apple will be showing off iOS 5, Mac OS 10.7 and iCloud of course. But we would have been a tad happier if Apple would provide more info on iPhone4S or iPhone 5 perhaps. But we never know, Apple might be keeping it as a surprise for us. For all we know, iOS 5 could be demoed with the new iPhone. We can’t wait till June 6, can you?

Press Release:

CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

WWDC will feature more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers. No app in OS X lets you do that. You have to use go through a long series of clicks in desktop background settings and manually find your file. The only other way is to open your image file in firefox and set as background, but having to open a a image from a browser to set it as background is lame.

Choose entire folders to be wallpapers: You can add a folder, but SUBFOLDERS ARE NOT INCLUDED. That means you can’t manually organize your wallpapesr. Again, iPhoto is useless for anything but photos, so unless all your wallpapers are photos, don’t expect iPhoto to be a solution.

Merging folders: (See a comment below for why you need to do this) When you copy a folder, if the new location contains a folder of the same name, there is no way to merge the folders. Instead, Finder overwrites the original folder with the new one. All files in the original folder are lost. The only way to get around this is to use the unix mv -v command….very user unfriendly design.

Trash is Broken

Cannot selectively delete trash: There is no way to delete one or several items in trash at a time. (useful when you want to double check the items one at a time before you actually delete them). You can only empty all the trash at once.

Cannot restore trash: If you accidentally moved something to trash by accident, there is no option to restore the file to its original location. You have to remember where it was. Why do you even need trash if you can’t even restore what you deleted to where it was? If you accidentally deleted a file buried deep in the filesystem, does it make sense to drag it back to….for example…Desktop??

Finder is Broken

There is no cut: There is no "cut" option like in all other OS. So to move a file you have navigate to the destination in a separate Finder window and drag to it, or drag while navigating in the same Finder window through many folders and hope you don’t miss.

Can’t calculate total size: When you select some files in a folder and right click -> Get Info to find the total size, Finder displays a box for EACH item with the individual sizes.

There are lots more if you are interested to know.
