This update is available for everyone, and contains several improvements over the preceding version. On the security front, Chrome 12 includes 14 security fixes for which Google rewarded $6837 to security specialists. Chrome 12 has enhanced its phishing and malware protection, and now warns you before downloading malicious files from the Internet without sharing your browsing habits with Google.

Remove Flash Cookies within Chrome

Chrome 12 provides easier way to delete Flash cookies, also known as Local Shared Objects. Flash cookies are often used by advertisers to track user behavior, and prior to Chrome 12 eradicating Flash cookie was pretty complex. Now it’s all within the browser.

Hardware Accelerated 3D CSS

Chrome 12 supports 3D CSS with full hardware acceleration, and as Google puts it, it will provide “snazzier experience in some web pages and web apps that choose to implement 3D effects”. Google has put up a short demo of what 3D CSS is capable of doing by taking clips from Aardman Studio’s “Shaun the Sheep”. It demoes some animated 3D CSS effects such as rotate the video, scale it up and down, toggle the reflection on and off, and activate a rotating carousel of videos. You can check out the demo at chromeexperiments.com/shaunthesheep

Other New Features:

Launch Chrome WebApps from Omnibox

Integrated Sync into new settings page

Improved support for screen reader

New Warning Message is displayed when Command+Q is press (Mac users only)

Google Gears has been stripped from Chrome

How to Update: You can automatically update your browser by clicking on the wrench icon from the toolbar, and hitting “About Google Chrome”. If you are a network administrator or considering a standalone installer of Google Chrome, visit this page.

If you want to use bleeding-edge version of Chrome, which is already in version 13, get it from developers channel of Chromium.

Stories you may like:

Google Fixes Critical Security Flaws in Chrome Browser

Google Chrome 11 Graduates from Beta

Google Chrome Beefs Up Security Against Malicious Downloads and Plugins Vulnerability

This article, Google Chrome 12 Stable Released – Better Security, Privacy and 3D CSS Support, was published at TechBuzz. Chrome 13 includes several new additional features and improvements over the previous dev channel release, Chrome 12, which just hit beta channel about a week ago.

What’s new in Chrome 13 dev channel release?

Multiple Profile Switcher: Lets users to switch between different profiles for Chrome. For instance, you can log on to your business related Google Account in one window of Chrome, and use a different window for your personal Google Account, without any interference. It helps you save time without having to log in and out, every time you need to switch between your accounts.

Background Apps: Allows Chrome Apps to run quietly in background even if the browser is closed. Apps which provide email, twitter and other essential notification can make use of this feature to run in background and continue to provide notification. In Chrome 13, background app feature is enabled by default, users who are concerned about resource consumption or privacy may turn it off by unchecking “Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed” from Options > Under the Hood

Tab Page: Experimental new feature which groups most visited sites, and apps. It appears like new tabs can be added and customized by the user, but that feature is not available in the dev channel release. It’s still very flaky and would most likely be developed in the later dev releases or stable build.

Restrict Instant to Search and Compact Navigation: Chrome 13 also includes option to restrict Google Instant to search only. It was a bit irritating earlier, when Google Instant would begin when loading every webpage. Compact Navigation improves the usability of Chrome in situations where screen size is limited (netbooks for example). With compact navigation enabled, the location toolbar of Chrome appears only when you open a new tab, or press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + L and silently disappears once you are done loading the webpage. Other experimental features include Side Tabs to move Chrome’s tabs to the sidebar, GPU accelerated Canvas to harness your GPU to render the page.

Linux: Support for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS “Hardy Heron” has been discontinued with Chrome 13 since it has reached its end of life, and Canonical has stopped providing updates and security patches.

All these experimental features can be enabled by typing “about:flags” in Chrome’s location bar. You can download Chrome 13 from dev channel

Side note: Chrome needs master security password. Firefox has had it for ages now, and allows users to safely remember their passwords. Although Chrome has “Remember Password” functionality, it does not have master password to lock all your passwords from being accessed by folks who share the computer with you. I’m hoping Chrome would eventually get a master password feature. Until then, “Remember Password” feature remains worthless for me.

Stories you may like:

Google Chrome Beefs Up Security Against Malicious Downloads and Plugins Vulnerability

Google Chrome 11 Graduates from Beta

Google Chrome gets a new logo, looks more flatter now

This article, Google Chrome 13 Dev Channel Release, What’s New?, was published at TechBuzz. Needless to say, newer versions of any browser do include bug fixes and other trivial improvements. Google Chrome’s stable version which launched two years ago is already in version 10, whereas Firefox with 7 years of availability is just in version 4 now. Prior to Chrome, Mozilla had a practice of releasing updates in their sub-versions.

Things are shifting for Firefox in their roadmap. Firefox 5, 6 and 7 are being developed to be tossed in 2011 with several slight incremental updates. Nightly builds of Firefox 5 have been existing for quite some time now, but if you are one of those early adopters of Firefox, you can go ahead and get the nightly build of Firefox 6. Yes, you heard it right! Firefox 6.

Although Firefox 5 is very much juvenile at this point of time, Mozilla has gone ahead and started working on Firefox 6, and you can download nightly build of Firefox 6 from Mozilla’s Nightly Build Page

Stories you may like:

Firefox 4 Final Officially Available for Download

Mozilla Firefox Turns 5 Years Old

Internal Build of Opera Passes Acid3 Test!

This article, Firefox 6 Nightly Build Available for Download, was published at TechBuzz. I’m so habituated to several extensions that I can’t fully switch to Chrome, even though I love Chrome. But that’s going to change and change real soon! Lee Mathews observed a small change in the latest build of Google Chrome. The lower right edge of the homepage, which has a small graphic linked to the Theme Gallery has now been replaced with a Puzzle image which links to https://chrome.google.com/extensions:

“According to a recent posting on Google Groups by Chrome team member Neil Baum, extensions are set to hit Chrome’s beta channel in early December. The plan may well be to launch both the updated beta and extension gallery at the same time” – Download Quad

The extensions link which previously redirected to Google Search, now greets you with “coming soon” message, which leads me to believe that extension gallery is just around the corner. Once extensions arrive in the stable builds on Google Chrome, I think Firefox developers will start porting their extension to Chrome. Once that materializes, Firefox will get some much-needed competition.

I’m looking forward to try extensions on Google Chrome. Firefox consumes way too much resources and I find it sluggish compared to Chrome these days.

Stories you may like:

How to Make Old Extensions Work on Firefox 2.0

Opera Alternatives to Firefox Extensions

Firefox 2 Beta 2 Released

This article, Sneak Peak: Google Chrome’s Forthcoming Extensions Gallery, was published at TechBuzz. It was Firefox which revolutionized the concept of extensions – small add-ons which can be installed to extend the browser’s functionality.

“Five years ago today, Mozilla launched Firefox 1.0 with belief that, as the most significant social and technological development of our time, the Internet is a public resource that must remain open and accessible to all. Within the first four days of launch, more than 1 million people had downloaded a brand new browsing experience.

In just five years, that number has swelled to over 330 million users worldwide; almost a quarter of Internet users worldwide choose Firefox. Today, Firefox ships in more than 70 languages and offers users more than 7,000 add-ons to help customize their browsing experience.” – The Mozilla Blog

Firefox fans are hosting parties and celebrating FF’s 5th birthday by uploading images to Flickr. Forget watching videos on YouTube, even fetching simple email used to be time sucker on the dialup. Luckily, the times have changed and the technology has moved along with it. With the latest advances in wireless broadband, high speed internet is accessible from almost everywhere without having to sell arms and legs to pay for the hefty subscription fees.

No matter where you are, you can always be online. With 3G capable handsets and network carrier, you can access blazing fast internet on-the-go. Some ISPs even give free Netbook/Notebooks along with the modem, if you sign a contract.

Broadband Expert is a service that helps you choose the right broadband deal for your needs. It’s not very important if she is the oldest user on Twitter or not, but it’s really hard to find someone of her age willing to learn and try new online services. She is a source of inspiration to all those who say they are too old for the internet.
