How To Uninstall Programs on Mac Properly

Theoretically uninstalling on a Mac is as easy as finding the application, dragging it to the thrash can and you’re done. But applications usually store more information elsewhere on the hard drive, most notably they store some preferences and they can also store support files in the library folder. To completely delete a program from your Mac you have to find these files and remove them.

Look for Left Over Files

The first place you have to look for leftover files after you uninstalled the program is the Library folder contained in your user folder. Here, the files you are looking for will most likely be in the Application Support folder. After you spot the files you drag them to the thrash can as well. Now we have to do the same for the Library folder on the system level and also check the Application Support folder of other users that may be using the machine.

Remove Program Preferences

Next, in the user Library folder, we will find a Preferences folder. Here we are going to find only files that retained small amounts of information like the positioning you liked for your windows or what the options for the program were, so chances are you probably skipped this step if all you were after was freeing up some hard drive space.

Now look for files with names that somehow match the application you deleted and remove them also. However, some applications go beyond this and create folders containing many files so you want to search for these also and remove them completely. If you created an alias to the application anywhere you want to get rid of that as well. You can do a search for the application and it will usually come up with any other aliases or maybe some extra file somewhere that you didn’t find.

You can also use spotlight to search for documents created by the application. If it was a standard type of application like a word processor you probably wouldn’t want to get rid of your documents but if it was a very specific type of application like a game that created a certain type of files you might want to search for that type of game files.

You might find that you have some in your documents folder that you no longer want around so you can delete those as well. If you don’t want to go through all this trouble yourself there are many freeware applications that will allow you to do this very quickly and easy.

How To Make Firefox Look Like Google Chrome

The Firefox 4 browser has undergone a complete design change and now it looks more beautiful and compact. But a few of us never really liked the title bar and the menu bar. If you are also one of those who like the simplistic design of Google Chrome, then you are in luck. You can now easily implement it to your Firefox Browser by using the FXChrome add-on.

It’s quite simple to add it to your Firefox browser. Just enter the FXChrome add-on page and install it. After finishing the installation, restart Firefox. Now Firefox should look exactly like Google Chrome.

There is however one little catch, it misses the close button on opened tabs. To close a tab, you need to right click and choose the close option.

FXChrome is available for both Windows and Linux version of the Firefox browser.

Fix “Low on Storage Space” Error on WP7

Windows Phone 7 sometimes gives a weird “Low on Storage Space” error message, even when there is enough free storage space in your phone. This error also has a ripple effect with Outlook, which stops syncing and also drains the battery faster than usual.

Solution: Windows Phone might be taking up “Reserved Space” which is not displayed in About info. Reserved Space leaves no room for the operating system to cache files, forcing it to write too much information to memory too often, and hence the battery drains out. Ironically, the fix to this problem lies within Zune App on your computer, and not from your Phone’s settings.

Open Zune App > Settings > Phone > Reserved Space, and if your phone is taking too much Reserved Space, just reduce it a little to provide enough room for your phone’s operating system to cache files. If this doesn’t solve your problem, just check for new updates for Windows Phone 7. It can also be a bug with the operating system itself. As a last resort, you may also reformatting your device from Settings > About > Reset or Press and hold Volume Down + Power + Camera Button together. Let us know what works for you!

Open Chrome in Incognito Private Browsing Mode by Default

Chrome was one of the first browsers to implement a private browsing feature known as Incognito mode. Not a lot of Chrome users are aware of this very convenient feature. Incognito mode will not save your browsing history, password and clears your session as soon as you close your browser, without leaving any traces of your web activity.

In my opinion Chrome’s implementation of Private Browsing is better than that of Firefox because Chrome lets me use my tabs, and open a separate Incognito window, without disrupting my tabs on the main browser window. Firefox on the other hand closes all of your tabs while entering private browsing mode and reloads them when you exit, which is quite a pain. Firefox is my default browser, but whenever I need to go to private browsing mode, I choose to use Chrome instead of Firefox’s private browsing mode.

If you are someone like me, then this tip will help you save time by opening Chrome in Incognito mode by default:

Open Chrome in Incognito Mode in Windows:

Right-click on the Chrome Icon, and Choose ‘Properties’
In the target box, you’ll find something like this: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe” (might vary depending upon your setup)
Just add a blank space after .exe” and insert “-incognito” without quotes.

Open Chrome in Incognito Mode in Linux:

First Create Launcher for Chromium on your desktop or taskbar.
Right click the Chromium icon and choose ‘Properties’ and add “-incognito” without quotes in the command box.

By default, Chrome will open in Incognito window. It’s also possible to have a separate shortcut icon for Chrome and Chrome with Incognito using the same technique.

Sync Google Calendar and Contacts with Thunderbird

Having your Contacts and Calendar stored in the cloud with Google Services is pretty handy, but the evident downside of having your day-to-day activities in the cloud is that you cannot access them when you don’t have an active Internet connection.

This is one of the reasons why people prefer to use email clients such as Thunderbird to read and reply emails. Even when your Internet connection fails, you can still read the downloaded messages and reply to them while you are off-line. And with the help of some nifty extensions for Thunderbird, you can even extend it’s functionality and setup two-way sync between Google Contacts and Google Calendar with your Thunderbird setup. This tutorial will teach you how to configure and use Thunderbird and Google Services to make you more productive:

Installing Lightning Calendar Management Add-on:

I assume you have already installed Thunderbird, and configured it to read your email. If you haven’t installed Thunderbird, you can get it from mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird (If you need help configuring Thunderbird 3.0 for Gmail or Google Apps, refer this page)
Install Lightning Extension for Thunderbird. Lightning will enable you to manage your calendar within Thunderbird or subscribe to network calendars such as Google Calendar.

Google Calendar and Thunderbird Sync:

By default, Lightning cannot read or add events to your Google Calendar. Install Provider for Google Calendar from Mozilla Add-ons to allow Lightning to communicate with Google Calendar
Go to Google Calendar > Calendar Settings > Calendar Tab. Choose the Calendar which needs to be synced with Thunderbird, and right-click the XML button and copy the link to your clipboard.
Let’s proceed to Thunderbird and add the XML link which we just copied. Open Thunderbird > Events and Tasks > Calendar. Now right-click on the Calendar Sidebar on Left-hand side and choose ‘New Calendar…’ from the menu
Choose ‘Google Calendar’ check-box and paste the XML link into the Location field
Google Calendar Login window will popup and ask you to provide your Login Credentials.
Give a name to your Calendar and choose a color for your Google Calendar events and click Next button
All your events will now be synced between Thunderbird and Google Calendar

Note: Google Tasks won’t be synchronized with Lightning. This is one of those features missed out in Provider for Google Calendar add-on. Hopefully, it will be included in the future releases of the add-on.

Sync Google Contacts with Thunderbird

Importing your Google Contacts into Thunderbird is easy, but contacts added to Thunderbird won’t be automatically synced with your Google Contacts. This makes it difficult to compose messages, if you keep switching between Gmail and Thunderbird. In order to setup a two way sync, you’ll need Zindus add-on. Configuring Zindus is very straight forward!

Download and install Zindus from Mozilla add-ons
Go to Tools > Add-ons > Zindus and click Preferences button.
Zindus Configuration Settings window will show up. Click on the ‘Add’ button and choose ‘Google’ and give your login credentials. Configure the rest of the settings as per your need. You may choose to sync Google Contacts with Thunderbird’s Personal Address Book or a different address book. You may also choose to ignore Google Suggested Contacts or include Contact Groups into Thunderbird Address book.
Your new account should now show up. Choose ‘Auto Sync’ from Settings and click on the ‘Sync Now’ button.
Your Google Contact should now be visible in your Thunderbird address book. Any contacts add to Thunderbird address book should also be visible in your Google Contacts.

Fixing Blurry Text Anti Aliasing Issue in Firefox

Yesterday, we acquired a new ATI Radeon 6950 Graphics Card and hacked its BIOS to unlock inactive shaders and turn it into a more expensive 6970 Card. Everything went smooth, but for some reason Firefox decided to go ugly. The text and the UI looked a bit blurry with rough edges. Like This:

We tried everything we could in ATI’s Catalyst Control Panel, but nothing helped. This issue only affected Firefox, and none of the other application, which was a bit weird initially, but helped us narrow-down on the problem and resolve it. The main culprit for this problem turned out to be Firefox’s hardware acceleration feature, which tries to use GPU to render fonts and other elements of the browser. We simply disabled it, and restarted Firefox to solve the issue.

How to Disable Hardware Acceleration in Firefox

Click on the Orange Firefox Button, choose ‘Options’ from the menu (if you are using different operating system or older version of Firefox, go to Tools > Options). Go to Advanced, and under the ‘General’ tab, you will find ‘Use hardware acceleration when available’. Just uncheck it and restart your browser.

Hardware Acceleration is a very useful feature which uses your GPU’s potential to improve page and multimedia rendering, and it was too good to simply be disabled. Upon future stumbling, we found a nifty little extension called Anti-Aliasing Tuner which allows us to keep hardware acceleration feature enabled, but at the same time fix the blurry anti aliasing issue.

It’s not really a plug and play kind of add-on, and you may possibly have to fiddle around with the settings of the add-on to be able to resolve the blurry font issue.

Stabilize Shaky Videos with Deshaker for VirtualDub

Shooting videos with mobile phones usually produces shaky videos, and phone manufactures cannot afford to implement optical stabilization such as the ones in found in SLRs or professional video recorders. Stabilization can be either done using post processing software or optically by reducing motion associated shift in the position of the object. Optically this is done by either shaking the lens elements or the sensor to compensate for the shake. Digital Stabilization on the other hand works by shifting frames in the video to compensate for the blur.

Video manipulation software such as Adobe Premiere Pro stabilizes videos efficiently, but the software is very expensive to acquire. If you are a casual mobile user or have one-time requirement, purchasing expensive software doesn’t make sense.

VirtualDub, an open source video capture and video processing utility for Windows has a neat little filter called Deshaker, which can reduce the shakiness of your video and make rotation and zooming smoother using 2 passes stabilization for better reduction in camera shake.

Download and install VirtualDub, add Deshaker filter to the plugins directory of VirtualDub, and follow these instructions:

Open your video clip in VIrtualDub
Press Ctrl + F to open the Filter Dialogue Box, and add Deshaker filter
Select the source pixels and the correct video type from Deshaker configuration dialogue.
Go to Options and uncheck “Drop frames when behind”
Now process the frames with a first pass. To achieve this, Go to File > ‘Preview Filtered’
Open Deshaker configuration again and select ‘Pass 2’
Finally, encode the video (File > ‘Save as AVI’)

Note: Deshaker is not available in 64-bit version. 32-bit will work fine on 64-bit operating system.

Adding Facebook Send Button to WordPress

Facebook unveiled their new Send Button today, which essentially helps your visitors share links with not only their friends, but with Facebook groups and email addresses as well. Facebook takes send button statistics into consideration for Facebook Insights, which means send button shares actually add up to your like count, and hence visually representing the number of people who like your page. This is a good way to highlight your other visitors to promote your content by showing how many people share it.

It hasn’t even been a day, and there are already plugins which adds this new Send Button to your WordPress powered blog. What’s the point in installation a plugin, when you can simply copy paste three lines of code into your theme to get the same functionality. It doesn’t require any sort of experience to insert this little button into your blog. Here’s how you do it:

1. Go to Facebook Developers Website and get the code. You may ignore “URL to Send”, just set the font and color scheme according to your taste.

2. The code would look something like this: {code type=php}

3. Replace “APP_ID” from the above code with your own app id. You can get your app id from developers.Facebook.com (Click on “My apps” from the top navigation bar). If you haven’t created your app yet, scroll to the end of this tutorial to learn how to make one.

4. Replace href=”example.com” with WordPress permalink template tag, which will insert the URL of your posts: {code type=php}href=””{/code}

Your modified Facebook Send code without your app id would look like this:

5. You can now log into your WordPress Dashboard and go to the theme editor (Appearance > Editor)

6. Edit single.php and find {code type=php}{/code} Now paste your Send Button code just above it (or below it, if you want it to appear at the end of the post)

7. Click ‘Update’ button, that’s it. Simply remove the Send Button code, if you decided to ditch it in future for something better. You don’t need another plugin for this.

How to Generate Your Facebook App ID

If you haven’t figured out how to create your Facebook App ID, don’t worry. It’s very simple and anyone skilled enough to use Facebook can create an app for Facebook. Follow these instructions:

1. Log into Facebook and go to this URL – developers.Facebook.com/setup/

2. Facebook will now ask you for two things- Site name and Site URL. Your site name would also be your applications name, and it can be anything. While entering your domain, keep in mind that you will have to enter your full domain (http://google.com and not google.com)

3. Click ‘Create application’ and Facebook will provide application id (app id) and secret key.

Remotely Control Your PC with Your iPhone Using Splashtop Remote Touchpad

Isn’t it cool if you could remotely access your home PC from wherever you are. There are a bunch of apps which do this and today we’ll discuss one such cool tool. This tool is applicable for all iOS users so take a close look. Firstly, download an application called the Splashtop Remote Touchpad with your iPhone or iPod Touch from the iTunes Store, you will also need to download the Splashtop Remote Streamer application for your PC or Mac from the Slashtop Remote webpage.

After installing the app, launch Splashtop Remote and finish the setup process appropriately. Now you can configure the Remote Streamer application. You can now turn it on or off, configure network and security settings. When you finish doing all of this, go to your iPhone or iPod Touch and start using the downloaded app. After scanning through the list of computers that are Remote Streamer enabled, you may select your computer.

Enter the password you used when setting up the desktop app and now you can access your desktop with your iPhone or iPod Touch. You may move the cursor, double click an application on the desktop, right click or left click etc. You will see an icon on the top left portion of the screen which will bring out a virtual keyboard. This keyboard acts as a full PC keyboard, with more buttons, arrow keys and a windows button as well. You may tap on the same button on the top left corner to go back to use the device as a touchpad. You can change the sensitivity controls of the TouchPad according to your liking.

The Splashtop Remote TouchPad is an intuitive and easy to use application letting you remotely control your desktop through an iPhone or an iPod Touch from your office or at your friend’s place. But bear in mind that you need to be on a Wi-Fi network to access this feature.

Evil Series: Turn Firefox 4 or 3 into Keylogger and Steal Passwords

Firefox has a feature which remembers your password, so that you don’t have to physically type it whenever you visit your favorite site like Facebook or Twitter. Each time you log into the site for the first time, Firefox will display a note requesting whether you want to save the password or not. By removing this password prompt message, you can turn your Firefox into a secret key logger remembering each and every password used to login. There are two scenarios where you may find this worthwhile:

1. You are the only person using the computer, and you have used a master security password. In this scenario, you find it rather annoying to see the message consistently, and it’s safe to disable the password prompt since you have encrypted all your passwords with a master password, which is required to either use or view your saved password.

2. Your friend frequently uses your computer, without your permission and you want to steal his password to warn him about the consequence. Whatever the reason maybe, I truly believe having your own little key logger in your own computer isn’t something which is morally wrong; unless you are stealing his PayPal password (Firefox doesn’t remember passwords from sites like PayPal by default).

Firefox saves all its “not-to-be-messed-with” settings in the components folder normally located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\. We modify nsLoginManagerPrompter.js to change the way Firefox behaves when it comes to saving passwords.

How to Disable Save Password Notification in Firefox 4+

1. Go to your Mozilla Firefox installation folder. By default, Firefox 4 is installed to this folder: C:/Program Files (×86)/Mozilla Firefox/ (in Windows 7)

2. Here comes the tricky part, Firefox 4 saves most of its components in an archive called omni.jar and archive extracting tools such as the one built into Windows 7 or 7Zip fail to open or extract omni.jar. I tried WinRAR 4 and it seems to handle omni.jar without any snags. I have not tested other programs, so it’s wise to make a backup of omni.jar for the worst case scenario. Also note that WinRAR cannot extract omni.jar in system folders such as “Program Files”, so copy omni.jar to a different location before extracting it.

3. Open component > nsLoginManagerPrompter.js with a text editor (preferably the one with syntax highlight. I use Notepad++)

4. Select everything between line 800 to 869 and replace it with:

5. Save the file and repack omni.jar. Again, be a careful while you repack. Do not repack “omni” folder, but repack everything inside that folder. Compress it as zip, and then rename omni.zip as omni.jar

6. Close Firefox and overwrite the old omni.jar with the one which you just modified.

How to Disable Password Save Notification Bar in Firefox 3+

Removing the password save notification in Firefox 3+ is simpler than Firefox 4 because older versions of Firefox do not compress their components in omni.jar. You can find nsLoginManagerPrompter.js normally located in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components\

Replace line 642 to 711 with this code:

pwmgr.addLogin(aLogin);{/code}

Firefox will now save all the usernames and passwords automatically without the user’s consent. You can view saved password from Firefox > Options > Security > Saved Passwords.

Things to keep in mind:

1. Use this tutorial at your own risk and responsibility.

2. Do not use this tutorial with malicious intent.

3. nsLoginManagerPrompter.js might change when you upgrade your Firefox to a newer version.

4. Use a strong master password before you disable “Remember Password” notification. Otherwise, anyone with access to your browser can see your passwords in plain text.

How to Change Firefox Address Bar Search from Yahoo or Bing to Google

Firefox has a nifty little feature which doubles the address bar into very functional search tool. It’s very handy when you don’t know the exact address of any website. Let say, you want to go to the Wikipedia page of Microsoft, all you need to do is type “wiki Microsoft” into the address bar and it will run your text input through Google’s I’m feeling Lucky and takes you to Microsoft’s Wikipedia page.

That being said, it’s not always correct though. If it’s not sure about your query, it will simply take you to Google search results page for your query. But sometimes your address bar might change its default search engine with Yahoo or Bing without your knowledge thanks to some rogue application or erratic behavior by some Firefox add-on, and this can be very irritating since Firefox doesn’t provide easy way to change the default search provider of your location bar. If this ever happens to you, here’s how you fix it:

1. Open Firefox and type “about:config” (without quotes) and press Enter

2. Firefox will throw a witty caution message saying “This might void your warranty!” – Just hit “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button and move on

3. Use the filter text entry box to search for keyword.URL. Double click the Preference Name (keyword.URL) and paste Google’s I’m Feeling Lucky search URL – http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&q=

4. That’s it

You can use the same approach to change your search engine from Google to Bing or Yahoo.

How to Sync Your Facebook Events with Google Calendar

Lightning for Thunderbird, Google Calendar, Facebook Events, Remember The Milk and the list goes on. Calendars are supposed to make things easier for us to remember, but unfortunately each one of these services have their own ups and downs, and nothing can be more annoying than managing multiple calendars.

Katharine wonders whether it’s possible to sync Facebook Event Invitation with Google Calendar. Yes, it is very simple to synchronize your Facebook events with Google Calendar or any other Calendar service which accepts iCal feed. Here’s how you do it:

Copy iCal Feed from Facebook

1. Log into Facebook.com and click on “Events” from the left hand-side bar

2. At the end of the “Event” section, you will find a link named “Export Events”. Click on it.

3. Copy the iCal link from “Export Events” popup and head over to Google Calendar. (Caution: Don’t share this link with anyone – this will allow them to view your Facebook Events)

Add iCal Feed to Google Calendar

1. Go to Google Calendar. Click on “Add” under Other Calendar and choose “Add by URL” from the context menu.

2. Paste your Facebook Event link and click on “Add Calendar”

All your Facebook Events will automatically show up in your Google Calendar under “Other Calendars”. Hope this helps you Katharine!

How to Download Your or Friends’ Facebook Photos in Bulk

As per stats revealed back in 2008, Facebook is the largest photo sharing site on the internet, and they host more than 10 billion photos. These are not screenshots, not comics or some image dumping site like Photobucket. These are real people with real pictures who upload them to share with their friends. Lately, Facebook has even started hosting high resolution photos, making it an indispensable backup asset for your pictures in situations like data lose or hard drive crash, but there is no straight way of downloading your albums in bulk.

Of course, you may download each photo manually using nothing but a browser, but what a waste of human hours would it be, if you are trying to download an album with say 200 pictures in it? Fortunately, there is a third party tool called fbDownloader which makes it fairly simple to download all your facebook photos in one click. You can even sneakily download your friend’s photo albums without his knowledge, just for fun sake! Here’s how you do it:

1. Download fbDownloader (905Kb) and install it.

2. Run the Program – It doesn’t create desktop shortcut or add itself in the start menu, you can run it from wherever you installed it (by default Program Files/ Social Tools, Inc/)

3. Login into Facebook and give permission for the app to grab photos.

4. Choose what you want to download. You may either download your tagged photos, or your photo albums or your friends’ photos. If you are downloading your friends’ photos, choose your friend so that fbDownloader can show you his albums.

5. Click on the download link, and it will start downloading all the photos from the selected album(s).

Of course, this isn’t the only way to download photos from Facebook. There are many other alternatives available out there. If you find a better one, drop us a comment below.

How to Uninstall Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview

Microsoft Office 2010â€™s public beta just leaked on peer-to-peer file sharing. Prior to installing the latest beta, you must uninstall the previous version of Office 2010. If you try uninstalling it, youâ€™ll be greeted with this error message:

â€œThis product installation has been corrupted. Please reinstall from original CD or source.â€

According to Vikas Narula from Technet, the problem is cause by a missing file from the installation folder of Office 2010:

â€œTo uninstall Office 2010 14.0.4302.1000 if you have an uninstall error message "This product installation has been corrupted". The Problem is a missing file in the installation folder of office 2010. Office 2010 as a Setup Controller directory and uses the directory to check the installed components. Please check he directory "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\Office Setup Controller\Groove.en-us\". if you have no "Setup.xml" file there please copy the file from the "Groove.en-us" directory of the source files to this directory and test the uninstallation againâ€

To fix this issue, right click and save setup.xml to your computer and copy it to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE14\Office Setup Controller\Groove.en-us\

Now try uninstalling Office 2010 Technical Preview.

Use Windows 7 Upgrade Disc to Perform Full Install and Save $80!

Upgrade disc are generally meant for those who are upgrading from a previous operating system. If you perform a clean install using the upgrade media and try activating Windows, it wonâ€™t work. But Paul Thurott from WinSuperSite Blog has figured a work-around to use Windows 7 upgrade media to perform fresh full install of Windows 7. This means, instead of purchasing the regular copy of Windows 7, you can go for Upgrade disc and save $80 immediately! Unlike Vista, where you had to install the OS twice to be able to use the upgrade media to perform clean install, there is a much simpler alternative for Windows 7. This is how you do it:

1. Perform a clean install of Windows 7 and make sure there are no pending updates in Windows Update. Now go to Start Menu and type â€œregeditâ€ and press the enter key. (UAC will show up, if enabled).

2. Navigate to HK_L_M\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Setup\OOBE

3. Change the value of MediaBootInstall from â€œ1â€ to â€œ0â€

4. Go to Start Menu and type â€œcmdâ€. Now right clicking the shortcut and choose â€œRun and Administratorâ€. (Again, UAC will show up, if enabled)

5. In the command prompt, type: slmgr /rearm and press enter. Thatâ€™s all. Now try activating Windows 7 using your product key, it should work.
