It will be available on June 15th across U.S, U.K, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Spain from Amazon and Best Buy. Google is advertising Chromebook as a no-frills attached computer which boots up in 8 seconds, doesn’t need antivirus, and runs it all from a web browser kind of netbook. Watch the introducing video:

Google has partnered with Acer and Samsung to manufacture these Chromebooks. Although, it may not sound as appealing as a standard laptop, Google is trying to sell it’s simplicity and make the web accessible to the mass. With built-in 3G, WiFi, cheapy price tag and sweet battery life of upto a day on a single charge, it might be very appealing to those who use their computers for simple day-to-day tasks like browsing the web, checking emails or connecting with friends on social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Chromebooks won’t be running any native application like iPhone or Android, infact it won’t even ship with a harddrive or DVD tray. Everything is accessible through the cloud, and stored in the cloud. Chromebook will sync all your information with other devices you own that runs Chrome. For guest usage, Chromebooks will have a incognito like feature which allows Guests to login without them being able to access your person information, and when they log out of the guest account, all their browsing history will be erased from the Chromebook.

Though Chromebook will never be able to replace a traditional computer, having everything stored in the cloud has it’s obvious advantages. Like for instance, you could switch between devices and still access all your mails, calendar and photos. And if you lose your Chromebook, just purchase a new one and start using it. Everything is stored in the cloud, so your personal information won’t be leaked if you lose it. Your new Chromebook will run without any setup or backup restoration.

Google also plans to sell these devices for Enterprises and Schools. Chromebooks will be bundled with cloud management console to remotely manage and manage user devices, applications and policies. Monthly subscription starts at $28/user for business and $20/user for Schools. It would be interesting to see if Chromebooks will gain any traction in Enterprise, considering it’s low acquisition costs, remote management ability and regular hardware replacement guarantee provided by Google.

Do you think Google’s Chromebook will be able to gain critical mass? Tell us on Twitter @buzzytech

We think if they price it well, it might be the next big thing. It reminds us of the OLPC projects!

Update: All Chromebooks ship jailbreaked! Over 100 businesses and schools piloting Chromebooks including Intercontinental Hotels and Jason’s Deli

Stories you may like:

Amazon Cloud Player Miraculously Working on the Default iOS Browser (Safari)

Google News Cloud

Windows 8 will Include Cloud Based Authentication for User Logon

This article, Google Chromebook Finally! Now the latest news is that their Google Chrome OS, first announced in July will be available for download as early as within the next week.

It raises a few questions in my mind: How different will it be from their Android OS for Mobile and what distinct features it might have. Since it is in its early stages of development and is said to be based on Linux.

What could be the possible limitations of this OS.

Will it run third-party applications from the hardware or simply connect to applications in the internet cloud.

Google claims it will end security related issues. Will the new OS be ‘really free’ from viruses, trojans and malware.

Will it be limited to the applications hosted by Google.

Google Chrome OS is claimed to be lightweight and targeted at the entry level notebook users. Google intends its Chrome OS to be lightweight and connect its users quickly to its Cloud applications, which it hopes will consume very less system resources.

But do we have any use for the Chrome OS on a desktop? Atleast not right away! On a notebook it might provide some functionality. But on a desktop pc it might just serve as a gateway to connect to the internet while completely relying on the internet to get any work done.

Although in terms of performance; an OS such as this one with minimalist functionality could outpace the current crop of operating systems. It may free these notebook devices with limited functionality from running memory hogging operating systems such as the Windows and Windows Applications.

But from a practical point of view for many computer users notebooks are ‘practically’ useless for any real work.

Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Cinema 4D or even PC Games or any other heavy duty stuff would be possible in the cloud? I don’t think it would be possible, at least not at the moment. So for some of these reasons it may not hold much value for developers and power users alike.

It would be naive to say that all the pc users account for the aforementioned, but the trade-off here is that for those who use computers for ‘data entry’ this would provide a more ‘cost effective’ option as opposed to running a Windows OS. The Google Chrome OS is free and open-source and subject to future development and upgrades from vast number of developers.

The trade-offs here need to be considered. These days with the many manufacturers and wireless carriers selling notebooks as another piece of communication hardware, and not a full blown computer; an operating system such as the Google Chrome OS might actually be worthwhile on a notebook.

With most of us looking for an working operating system that pretty much does what we would like to get done; Windows, Mac and even Linux seem to fit the bill very well, therefore leaving very little space for Chrome OS to occupy.

If you wish to read more about the Google Chrome OS, read all about it at The Official Google Blog and Google Chrome Blog.

Stories you may like:

Google Chrome Frame: Clever Way to Fix and Kill Internet Explorer

Opera and Opera Mobile 9.5 to Support Google Gears

Google Socializes the Web with Friend Connect

This article, OS Overpopulation: Google Chrome OS – Do We Really Need Another Operating System?, was published at TechBuzz.
