How to Fix Windows 7 Error “audio service is not running”

Recently when I rebooted my computer, the audio stopped running. Usually, troubleshooter will automatically fix the problem, but surprisingly in this occasion, even the troubleshooter failed to start. The speaker icon in the notification area had a red cross over it.

windows_audio Here’s a work around:

1. Click on Start, and type Services.msc in the search bar.

2. Scroll through the list of services, right click on Windows Audio and click Start.

If this doesn’t work, make sure, you have started all other dependent services such as Plug and Play, Multimedia Class Scheduler, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

Probably nothing to do with win7, but recently my speakers have been picking up random radio frequencies!!!

WINDOWS 7 automatically does all those needs of drivers for the PC, its alright if further any problem exist i could try this since i don't have the DRIVER DISC for my motherboard…

  • Aethelstan

This has happened to me on a few occasions, as well as the network/internet service stopping.
The way I fixed it was by disabling and re-enabling the devices in device manager.
But what causes this to happen in the first place and is there a way to prevent it?

It helped me. Thanks a lot!My “Multimedia Class Scheduler” service was disabled.

  • shalva.lasha

I HAVE STARTED all other dependent services such as Plug and Play, Multimedia Class Scheduler, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder BUT IT DOESN’T WORK :( BECAUSE  WINDOWS COULD NOT START THE WINDOWS AUDIO SERVICE ON LOCAL COMPUTER.ERROR2: THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE FILE SPECIFIED.HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ?????:(

  • http://www.staticbrain.com Static Brain

This is a common bug in windows 7 when it says audio services it is not working when it is. If your service really isn’t running, the above fixes should help. However, usually just adjusting the volume slider will make the red x disappear.

  • Winter1022

Audio Endpoint Builder is not on the list. Now what?

  • Jmkora

Thank you. I had to startup the multimedia service, after which it worked fine.

  • Sotiris

Unfortunately, it did not work for me.
Still I believe that something similar is needed to solve my problem.

This happened after I switched on the laptop from sleep and since then there is no sound. The bad thing is that there is no sound with external speakers as well.

I’ve restared all that you’ve said and yet my sound was not fixed.

  • http://tech-buzz.net Thilak Rao

Did you try running the built-in troubleshooter in Windows 7?

  • Sotiris

Yes, but it does not detect any problems.
It may be a hardware problem after all.
What’s odd is that not even external speakers work which means it’s not my speakers the  problem.

  • Sotiris

    Thanks for your reply!

Windows Audio service doesn’t show in services.msc
Audio isn’t in the registry either.

How to fix this? All I did was install new gfx-drivers, then the sound stopped working and now I’ve got no sound service showing up anywhere. I’ve got all the dependencies, but no Windows Audio service showing up anywhere.

  • Liddylady11

On my Windows 7 it simply said Services and I had to restart the Windows Audio because it was already started.
Still, THANK YOU, this helped me a lot. I thought I was going to be forced to call someone. ^.^

    I have a problem..
I received msg “Windows could not start Windows Audio services on Local Computer”

  • Rat

That’s all good and well that one can go into the services and start it, but if it is set to automatic, it should start on it’s own, but I have to go into services and manually click on start every time. Why does it not start automatically?

  • tnpianoman

I restarted the Windows Audio service and it also resolved the lack of audio problem. Thank you Thilak!

  • Brian Diffenderfer

if you click the icon and just move the volume slider, the red “X” goes away and it no longer says “service not running”, its just a cosmetic bug and nothing else, no need to do services.msc etc

  • Armen Kurdian

I had the same problem. The issue was the multimedia class scheduler…it was disabled. I set it for automatic, then started it. I was finally able to restart the audio service.

  • Syed Zain Haider
