Google Unveils Android 2.0 Source, Already Ported to G1 by Hackers

Motorola Droid has been selling for well over one week now, but Android 2.0 OS which powers the Droid was never truly released by Google. Handset manufactures, apart from Motorola and HTC, couldn’t play with Android 2.0 until yesterday, but now they can! Google just raised the curtains over Android 2.0’s source code.

As I’m writing this post, Android developers are working on porting Android 2.0 to older Android devices. Hours after the source was uploaded, developers have already ported it to the first-born Android handset, HTC G1. Cyanogen posted a tweet, which says “It runs really well, fast and smooth. Audio and video not working yet though” on G1. Hopefully, they’ll get the audio and video to work as soon as possible. Here’s a screenshot of Android 2.0 running on G1:

It would be safe to assume that update won’t be coming from the manufacture in the next month or two. That being said, I expect hackers to release tutorials to hack your device and upgrade it to the latest Android 2.0 in the next few days.
