Rest In Peace: Yahoo GeoCities Closes Down on 26th October

Yahoo! finally pulls the plug on GeoCities. Yahoo! closed GeoCities on 26th October. Yahoo! bought over GeoCities in January 1999 for $3.6 billion dollars. It is considered one of the original web-hosting services on the internet which was acquired by Yahoo!

GeoCities before its closure hosted over 7.5 million websites and over 8 million images.

GeoCities was one of the pioneers of web-hosting services. GeoCities gave users several publishing tools, which any one with almost zero web design/coding skills, could use to build their own webpage over the internet. I still remember building my own GeoCities website in the late year 2000.

It is known that GeoCities traffic has been falling over the recent months and therefore Yahoo! decided to pull the plug on one of the oldest internet web-hosting services on Tuesday.

We decided to search for GeoCities on Google and it turned up some interesting results!

Check it out now:

Google web search for GeoCities showed us 7,450,000 resultsgeocities

Google image search for GeoCities showed us 8,430,000 results
