An organization of gay-friendly social moguls called Dot Gay Alliance is proposing the addition of a fresh top-level domain – .gay for self-identified gay businesses, individuals and organizations. According to the proposal, 51% of all proceeds made will be given back to the LGBT community.
“.GAY is a new Internet community of self-identified gay businesses, individuals and organizations. But it’s a community that gives back: 51% of all profits earned will be returned to the LGBT community in the form of grants to leading civil rights organizations. That means that everyone who owns a .GAY web address automatically contributes to the fight for LGBT equal rights in the US and around the world” – Dot Gat Alliance
This proposal will be pushed before ICANN, which manages all top-level domains (TLD) by early 2010. If accepted by ICANN, .gay domain will be available for purchase by next year. My question is, possessing a “dot gay” domain is an instantaneous pointer that your or your association is either gay-owned or gay-friendly, but don’t you think people will start exploiting it by registering domains which sound like Looksso.gay or something?
