Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex Rolls Out

Canonical, the company which develops the Ubuntu Linux, announced the release of the latest version codenamed as Intrepid Ibex 8.10. The new Ubuntu brings the latest and greatest cutting-edge innovation Open Source has to offer. Being a successor of the epic successful Ubuntu, its arrival has sparked much fanfare among users.

Ubuntu 8.10 features better hardware compatibility, bug fixes, speed boosts and some added features such as :

  • Linux Kernel 2.6.27
  • GNOME 2.24
  • Nautilus - Tabbed file browsing and Eject Icons for removable devices.
  • File Roller – Now supports ALZ, RZIP, CAB, TAR.7Z file types also.
  • Encrypted Private Directory – Although not default, the package has been promoted to the main repository.
  • Guest Session.
  • Totem BBC Plugin etc.

A dark brown color scheme is also said to be included in the new package. With applications such as Wine and Open Office also getting an upgrade, linux use is stepping to a new level. Firefox 3 comes pre-installed and there will be a live CD (one of the most awesome features if you ask me). And these are only some of the features. There are more goodies out there.   • The days of Windows dominating is over! Ubuntu is for free, and is being offered OEM preloaded by more and more computer companies. Viva Open Source!

    Why is that Nicole, do you not have the facility to download them?
  • It sounds like this Ubuntu version is packed with dynamite features. I like the better hardware compatibility, bug fixes, speed boosts features the most, as these are the most important in any OS. I'll order right now, wait.... Does this mean that Flock has replaced Firefox in this package?
  • You forgot to mention new feature that this Ubuntu supports 3G network connectivity.
