I haven’t really been blogging actively since the beginning of this month. Now it’s about time I disclose something to all my readers. For about 2 months now, me and my brother have been working on a secret pet project. Its social news site called Tagz.
I’ll bet the first question anybody would think of would be "Why another social news site?" Both me and my brother are avid delicious users and my brother tends to hang out (read: waste a lot of time) on programming.reddit. Though we love delicious and reddit, we’ve both got our bunch of pet peeves.
Things like:
- Delicious is kinda dumb about tags, it doesn’t know that tags like "book" and "books" (or "schedule" and "scheduling") are similar.
- No commenting on delicious, leaves out quite a lot of discussions.
- Better (fairer) ranking algorithm.
- Syntax highlighting for code in comments (this one’s by my brother)
So, essentially, we do digg, reddit style voting and delicious style tagging. Now, it isn’t quite ready for prime time yet, but here’s the obligatory screenshot.
Another related sidenote: I just had a major accident while riding my bike this afternoon and as a result, I’ve got a fractured thumb and a whole bunch of lacerations. Sadly, I’ll have to live with an orthopedic cast around my right hand for the next 21 days

Finally, Thilak, you’re back. I was thinkin’ of calling you but I lost all my friends’ numbers in a firmware upgrade (wiped off my contacts).

First, let me congratulate you on your recovering from your earlier accident. I thought that you were still recovering from it and so were not blogging.

On Tagz, it is a brave move but personally i would have preferred something completely new or innovative…That is how facebook or twitter or Digg or stumbleupon succeded…
Is it for indian only news? The .in TLD seem to be suggesting it..And none of the social networking sites in India have succeded really…
