Orkut users in India can now scrap each other or receive new scrap notification by SMS. Such a thing was only possible using a data enabled mobile device, but now it works on any cellphone with supported carriers.
You’ll need to link your cellphone number with your Orkut account from the settings page. More details on SMS commands can be found on this page. At present, Orkut SMS is supported by Aircel, BPL, MTNL, Reliance, Spice and Tata only. I’m on Vodafone, so I couldn’t try it myself. You should also keep in mind that Orkut SMS is not free, your carrier might charge you for the service.
Thanks, Rahul.

Why did they leave out Airtel and Vodafone, the two most widely used carriers?

I am advised by knowledgeable people that Orkut has a lot of viruses which can affect your mobile phone usage. Somehow google seems to treat Orkut as a step child! I personally will not use this facility.

Nice feature!
And it sucks that it isn’t released yet, here in pakistan. How long before they release it here?
Also, what are the charges for using this service?

When you say it is not free, how much are you talking about? Is it worth paying for?

More Orkut stuff! Good! Sounds like people can really get a good bonus through the phone.

Interesting point of view. I’ll consider changing my mind about this but for now I still don’t see things the same way you do.

Great to see Orkut’s expanding it’s functionality. It’s kind of underrated compared to the other social networks. Thanks for the update.

I really should give this service a try, it seems very unique. I know I am more than late on the scene with this one, but I always end up waiting on services after they beta.
