Flickr users have an option to turn off "All Sizes" of their photos when uploading them to the image hosting service. If you are the owner of the photo, you’d probably have the original photo stored in your computer, but what if you want to download the original size photo uploaded by someone else?

Fortunately, Flickr API doesn’t have any such restrictions and can be used to get the original size of the image. Get Flickr script uses the same API to make it simple for anybody to download or view the original image. All you need to do is past the Photo ID of the Flickr Photo. For example, if flickr.com/photos/username/2646391262/ is the URL of the photo, then the eight digits following the username is the Photo ID.

If you don’t want people to download the high resolution version of your photos, then the solution is to mark the photo as private while uploading. You can also try reducing the resolution before uploading.

I was just wondering how many of you use Flickr to archive your digital photos?

  1. Cool tip! Especially for people who play around in photoshop, and need higher resolution images to ply properly. I am always frustrated when finding a cool pic that is too low resolution and pixellated to do anything with.

  2. I do not use either to archive my photographs and prefer to store them in my computer. This information however is very useful. Thank you.

  3. Hiya Thilak, how are you doing? Was just wondering about the delay in my comments reflecting on your blog. You doing good? How are your injuries healing up? You back at work yet? Good luck mate!

  4. Flickr have a button ‘Download the Large size’ :)
