We all love Google Maps for giving us the correct driving directions from one point to another. But sometimes, if you are touring an unfamiliar location, it can be a little hard to translate the map in real world. This is because we humans prefer photographic memory of landmarks, than memorizing street names for driving directions. Google has now combined street view with driving direction to solve this dilemma. This way, you can get an actually real world preview before hitting the road.

streetview_directions When you look up traffic direction, you’ll notice camera icons wherever street view is available. Clicking on these icons will popup street view of that turn or intersection. You can follow the arrows in street view mode to get a better view of the road you are planning to hit.streetview_directions2

I think it’s a pretty neat integration of two cool map related services. At this point not all cities are covered, so if your city isn’t covered, you won’t see camera icons in driving direction.

  1. Very cool indeed…Can’t wait to find more sightings like these:

  2. As great as this technology is, surely, nothing like just stopping and asking someone for directions what? Unless of course, you are afraid to!

  3. Adding street views to map directions mean you can’t go wrong! Also nice way to strategically include advertising billboards (or blank them out, especially if their content is of a non-static variety). It sure adds a new dimension to billboard advertising.

Getting all the necessary shots needed could lead to an interesting interactive open source project. As a local businessperson you’d be happy to take some digital snaps to upload onto the website, won’t you? Especially if you get a link back to your website for your contribution…..

  4. @Nicole, stopping and asking directions is a great game to play. Why is it that the person you ask is always the “villiage idiot” (an expression we use here in the UK) and sends you totally the wrong way!

  5. It’s cool. One can find out exactly how to reach a new place without anyone’s help. This is some really cool technology.
