Late last month, Google added offline viewing and editing features to their word processor using Google Gears plugin. That move was pretty much expected because rival Zoho was already using Google’s own Gears plugin to offer the same feature in Zoho’s Writer web-application.

On Friday, Google said that the offline support for word processing is complete, and now they are moving ahead to offer offline support for presentation and spreadsheets apps as well. At this moment, it’s limited to viewing-only, but nonetheless I’m sure that they are working on offline editing feature and should be available shortly.

Besides offline support, Google Docs team also added two new features to their presentation app – Speaker notes and YouTube Video. Presenters can now write down notes and description for their presentation and print them or open it in a separate window for reference during presentation.

One or more YouTube videos can now be inserted into your slides. In some cases, including a video within a presentation can be really helpful in proving your point to your audience. I think the competition between Zoho and Google Docs is slaughtering Microsoft’s Office Suite.

  1. Great info as ever, I like the idea of adding YouTube vids, if you can find those at the right image quality of course.

  2. Thank God finally, something like this is happening.
