AVG 8.0 Free Version, includes Anti-Spyware

avg_logoBack in February, Grisoft released AVG 8.0 Professional which included anti-rookit and anti-spyware along with virus protection. I was a little disappointed because AVG 8.0 wasn’t available in free edition, and I was curiously waiting my favorite anti-virus to get a facelift. Yesterday, Grisoft released the free edition of AVG 8.0, which offers basic anti-virus protection for Windows XP and Vista.

Along with the new improved interface, AVG 8.0 Free can also bash spywares/adwares and includes basic LinkScanner for Safe Search.

I’ve been using AVG for over year now, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for free anti-virus protection. It’s one of the best rated anti-virus suites available for Windows.

I'm a PC tech and have been recommending AVG to my customers for several years. If you have Win2000 (sp4), XP or Vista get the new version 8.0 (http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe). If you use any Win9x (DOS based) or earlier Win2000, you can still get ver. 7.5 at 3rd party sites (Tech-Buzz and Cnet for example) and updates from AVG. In either case, 256mb RAM and 300mhz CPU is the minimum realistic hardware recommendation with both a firewall and anti-spyware running. It is important to clear out Windows junk every so often to keep things from bogging down. Diag utils like IOLO's "System Mechanic" (30-day full free trial) helps there if you don't want to tackle THAT by yourself.

You can disable some (not all) services on the Control Center interface. Right click each of the 7 service boxes and look for the "deactivate" option. Failing that, check the service properties for a "disable plug-in" option. If a service is disabled, the box will change color from blue to red. This will reduce the RAM load somewhat.

It should be mentioned that there have been a few review tests showing AVG's resource load is smaller than nearly every other AVware on the market, hence why it run's better in all systems (esp. the really old PC's). I've found even a lowly Win98 (1st ed) P1-166mhz with 128mb will work if there is no active anti-spy or firewall and only 1-2 window is open at a time. It certainly helps that AVG doesn't start out with an "octopusware" attitude! :^D
  • I landed up on the AVG site today and was about to buy, but thought how much better can it be then the original. $54 is quite a bit if we are going to update 15 PC's. What is it that we get, really, which is so much more.
  • I have been using AVG for about a year now and I love it! I love hearing that my Virus database has been updated every day lol. If you have it, you know what i'm talking about.
  • I must admit that I don't think that it is any were close to as resource rich as Norton. Norton was a royal pain in the ass and I was having problems sending and receiving emails.

I have been using AVG addition and its by far the best solution out there and it is FREE.

So much for the phrase nothing is for nothing because this is.
