Orkut Gets Mobile and Dial-up Friendly!

Finally, something which we’ve all been waiting for! Orkut Team has quietly dropped out a mobile friendly version of Orkut, which lets you view profiles, read/leave scraps, receive updates from your friends and much more on bandwidth optimized format. Facebook has one, YouTube has one, now even Orkut has one.

Visit m.orkut.com from your mobile browser to view the mobile optimized version of Orkut. You can navigate using keypad shortcuts on some mobile browsers. However, you cannot view communities and that’s probably the reason why this feature hasn’t been announced on their blog yet. Hopefully, we’ll be able to access communities by the time they official talk about this feature on their blog.

The interface isn’t as sweet as it could have been, but still works pretty decently. Considering the fact that 60% of all search queries on Google are done of mobile devices, Orkut’s mobile interface could be an instant hit here in India.

Besides the mobile friendly interface, Orkut has also added options to turn on low bandwidth version of their social site. The low bandwidth version is identically similar, but images on scrap and profile pages have been stripped to satisfy the diminishing number of dialup users. To enable low bandwidth version, go to General Settings page and turn it on.

Low bandwidth version for the Dialup users might sound a little old skool in this age of Web 2.0, but definitely a boon for laptop users, who rely on slow GPRS networks.

Kudos to InsideOrkut for the discovery

Mobile is where it is all heading, and any serious online player has to have mobile plans, otherwise they’ll be missing out on increasing amounts of marketshare as the online world develops. It is great to hear of low-bandwidth offerings, as GPRS is entry level mobile connectivity, and is slow, so the fast download speeds of low-bandwidth versions is great news, especially for developing countries, where broadband is expensive and scarce.

Great news. Now we will be able to work with orkut even from mobile. I was out of touch from orkut the past months due to exam. Now your news gave me more excitement to again look into it. Thanks and keep posting like this.
