Google Talk “Labs Edition” Released

Google Talk "Labs Edition" is an experimental build of the popular Google Talk desktop client, which borrows several features like group chat, emoticons, and tabs from the online Google Talk gadget. Labs Edition of Google Talk has been neatly integrated with Google Calendar and Orkut to provide event and scrap notification, on the other hand, some very functional features like voice chat and file transfer have been removed. AIM integration which we saw in Gmail chat is still missing. I’m beginning to wondering, if all those missed out features have anything to do with the ongoing Skype acquisition rumours.

Personally, I can’t think of many reasons to upgrade from the original Google Talk client to the "Labs Edition" because file transfer and voice chat are missing. Hopefully, they’ll come back in future versions of Google Talk. As Google OS points out, we now have four official flavors of Google Talk – original client, Google Talk Gadget, Labs Edition and Gmail Chat.

BTW, if you are a Linux or Mac OS X user, you are pretty much out of luck because Google Talk Labs Edition is Windows only, just like the preceding version.

  • Tried it out, but it just sucks. I was really expecting something big. It still looks like the flash app and I can't type Sinhala in it. Too bad :( And it feels kinda slow.
  • Wii
I've used Google Talk with contacts who wont touch MSN or Yahoo but am not over impressed with the interface. Maybe I just don't like change (or haven't taken the time to configure it properly) ?

    What is Google Talk Gadget?

PS - is there a problem with Tech-Buzz, this page looks kinda funny!
  • The talk about Skype being acquired by Google would seem to be supported by the features lacking in the labs edition of Google Talk, indeed. The usefulness of Google Talk without these features is debatable, and is unlikely to draw any new users away from established services like Skype, a personal favourite of mine.
  • hmm i'm not happy with this new client.
the old client was way faster! i don't get why they use all these web technologies for a desktop application. (they now use flash/webkit for a desktop application).

it just dont seem right to me. a native application will be faster. (the old version uses internet explorer btw, but it still seems a lot faster)
