Microsoft Surface Coming on April 17

Microsoft Surface Back in May last year, Microsoft unveiled a computer device which looks just like a coffee table, but with multi-touch user controls and is capable of identifying devices placed on it. Microsoft Surface had the wow factor which was admired by all. Back then, the technology sounded too good to be true, so we almost assumed it to be a vaporware, but no!

According to a press release from Microsoft, AT&T will be the first company to use Microsoft Surface starting from April 17th, 2008. Initially, AT&T will have Microsoft Surface in New York City, Atlanta, San Antonio and San Francisco stores.

Instead of just looking at the phone, AT&T customers will actually be able to walk upto a Surface Computer and place the demo phone on its screen to get details on features, accessories and even rate plans. Multiple phones can be placed on the screen to get side-by-side comparison of all the phones. Surface can also help the customer to check, if his area has good coverage from the carrier.

Just to refresh your memories, Microsoft Surface has a coffee table like dimension with a giant 30-inch multi-touch display on top of it. It’s capable of sensing touch, and identifying the device placed on top of it. Here’s a video, which will give you a better idea of what the Surface is capable of:

My first thought was that this took me back to the days of Space Invaders.

At the height of the game’s popularity, they started introducing sit down versions in arcades, making it easier for those who spent hours on it.

That is a bit unfair to Microsoft perhaps. Surface looks like it is going to be big.

Technology will never cease to amaze. Predicting where it will go is one of the most impossible challenges, so one is better off sitting back and waiting for the latest gadgets to come rolling out. Will this be an unmissable future item? Only time will tell!
