Now you can do shopping on the move, thanks to a new service launched by Amazon.com called "TextBuyIt". You no longer need to sit in front of your computer or walk into a store to do shopping. You can be just about anywhere, all you need is a cell phone.

Amazon TextBuyIt

All you need to do is simply text message the keyword of the product, UPC or ISBN to 262966 ("AMAZON") and they’ll text back with matching products, two at a time. Then you simply reply with the item number to buy the item or reply with "m" to get next two results. Similarly, to get details on an item, I need to text "xd" (where x is the item number).

Say for instance, I want to buy an iPod Nano. I’ll text message "ipod nano" to 262966. I’ll receive the list of matching products (say, 1)iPod Nano 4GB or 2)iPod Nano 8GB). To buy iPod Nano 8GB, I need to reply back "2".

Once your account gets associated with Amazon account, you need to provide the last four digits of your credit card to confirm the order. Pressing "*" in this stage will cancel the order and you’ll get the cancellation message.

I don’t think a lot of people will actually use text messaging for shopping. Personally, if I had a similar service here in India, I wouldn’t use it. Nonetheless, it would definitely be a great way to do comparison shopping, while you’re out for something.

  1. Wow, I don’t like this idea at all. I definitely want to have a nice, full screen view of everything I could possibly be ******** up. It’s hard enough to avoid charging to the wrong credit card on file with Amazon, accidentally getting the wrong quantity or shipping method, etc. At least on the computer screen, it’s all there at a glance to make it easy to see if you’ve done something wrong.

  2. Surprising! How fast they come out with new technology. As you said, I would probably not use this feature, but I think it would be a great way to shop without going to the store or getting on a computer.

  3. It’s going to be a good while before this takes off to any degree. Smart Phones are growing in popularity but not enough people have them right now - everyone else has a screen and connection that doesn’t suit mobile browsing.

In my humble opinion that is. Maybe I am just too old to be able to see properly on my phone’s screen!

  4. Just one question, how can you see the product you want to buy? I personally would want to have a look at the ipod or for that matter any product that I am buying before I actually purchase it.

  5. Amazing combination of Mobile technology and internet. Kudos to Amazon !!

  6. Interesting new feature but I dont think it will be used by many people.

  7. Fahad: Well, people might like it as a comparison tool.
