If you are a celebrity or politician, it’s not that hard for you to get a page on Wikipedia. For a common netcitizen, it’s just not possible because of the notability requirement laid down by Wikipedia. Of course, there are dozens social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn or Orkut, where you can create your own profile and others can see. But the problems behind that model is that only, and only the user can edit his profile, and it’s not mandatory for the user to be honest.
TechCrunch has reviewed a new Y Combinator startup called Biographicon, which promises to be somewhere between Wikipedia and social networking. It’s something like a social network where anybody can get a page, but at the same time anyone can edit your page. Think of it like a cross between social networks and the wiki model.
It’s quite simple to sign up and get your own page. I love their interface, and the simplicity to create biographies and add information to it. Once the page is created, you can add multiple sections of information. There is a provision to add connection to the biography by search for other biographies on Biographicon. Here’s my Biographicon page.
Like any another web startup, their success largely depends upon its users. If it doesn’t receive enough traction, users won’t bother to add more information to it. Biographies of some famous personalities are already up on Biographicon (Benzir Bhutto, Mahatma Gandhi, George W Bush).
