If you are a celebrity or politician, it’s not that hard for you to get a page on Wikipedia. For a common netcitizen, it’s just not possible because of the notability requirement laid down by Wikipedia. Of course, there are dozens social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn or Orkut, where you can create your own profile and others can see. But the problems behind that model is that only, and only the user can edit his profile, and it’s not mandatory for the user to be honest.

TechCrunch has reviewed a new Y Combinator startup called Biographicon, which promises to be somewhere between Wikipedia and social networking. It’s something like a social network where anybody can get a page, but at the same time anyone can edit your page. Think of it like a cross between social networks and the wiki model.

It’s quite simple to sign up and get your own page. I love their interface, and the simplicity to create biographies and add information to it. Once the page is created, you can add multiple sections of information. There is a provision to add connection to the biography by search for other biographies on Biographicon. Here’s my Biographicon page.

Like any another web startup, their success largely depends upon its users. If it doesn’t receive enough traction, users won’t bother to add more information to it. Biographies of some famous personalities are already up on Biographicon (Benzir Bhutto, Mahatma Gandhi, George W Bush).

  1. This sounds interesting! I might get a page!

  2. Personally I do not like orkut much. This introduction of making biographies by Biographicon looks like a good step taken. I too would love to make my biography soon.

  3. It has too simple design..fails to make first impression impact …. lets see how it is taken by users

  4. [...] TechBuzz: He recently was speaking about the new hot topic on biographicon. [...]

  5. I like the concept but Biographicon is a bit of a mouthful.

@ Shashank - I am a fan of simple, especially where it is easy to use. That is not a negative in my book.

  6. Hmm, they will need a pretty hard-working moderation force there, I would guess more and more ppl would like to edit Mr. Bush’s Biographicon their.

  7. I am planning to set up my whole family and then ask them to set up their friends and extended family. I belong to a grad. school group and we will do the same.

  8. We’ll see how it goes. I see it as being more valuable as time goes on. As I get older, it becomes obvious (and sad) how I can’t find any information on people from my past. The geneaology crowd is putting information together, but that is not usually accessable except by a select few, and many families don’t have any information. Our past drifts away so fast! Biographicon looks like it could become a genealogical goldmine.

@Annie: I think you are doing the right thing. Younger people are always interested in where they came from and too often they are left with nothing. Hopefully others will do the same as you. What we put down now will become gold to others later.
