Orkut sends an email notification whenever someone leaves a scrap on your profile, but the email just contains the link to your scrapbook, and not the actually message. Rahul Bansal’s newly launched Orkut Feeds service will partially solve our problem.
Orkut Feeds will neatly translate your scraps into RSS feeds, and lets you subscribe using your favorite RSS reader. Now combine this with free RSS to email services such sendmerss.com, and you’ll get prefect scrap notifications along with the message.
Orkut Feeds doesn’t need your username and password, which is probably an advantage and as well as a downside. Advantage because you’ll feel a lot safer without revealing your account credentials, downside because it can’t read scrapbooks which have been locked.
If you are willing to give-up on privacy, then this Orkut Feeds is a great tool for you! Likewise, you can also use the trick to backup your scraps (as emails) or spy on any scrapbook, which hasn’t been locked. Nice!
PS: Vikas Patial had a similar script, but he has now put it up for sale.
Update: Just got a mail from Rahul informing me about a temporary workaround to subscribe my own locked scrapbook without having to sacrifice on privacy or reveal my account details. All you need to do is add Orkut Feeds Bot to your friends list. Here’s the link to the bot’s profile: http://www.orkut.com/Profile.aspx?uid=10226448830416481862.

I guess from Orkut’s perspective, having a link back to the scrap book keeps people visiting the site and the community alive.
The RSS option/plugin gives the users the choice they deserve though.
