As we all know, Mozilla Foundation had formed a new subsidiary back in September 2007 to manage Thunderbird email client. Until today, this subsidiary was entitled as MailCo, but now it has been official named as Mozilla Messaging.
David Ascher, CEO of Mozilla Messaging has also thrown some lights on Thunderbird 3’s developments. They plan on integrating a calendar based on the popular Lightning add-on, along with better search capabilities, easier configuration and better user interface.
He also adds that Mozilla Messaging isn’t just going to be about email. Thunderbird already includes RSS and newsgroup handling abilities, and we can expect other forms of communication like IM, IRC, SMS and VoIP to be supported by Thunderbird.
"It is worthwhile considering what the right user experience could be for someone using multiple email addresses, multiple instant messaging systems, IRC, reading and writing on blogs, using VoIP, SMS, and the like. What parts of those interactions make sense to integrate, and where? I don’t believe that stuffing all of those communication models inside of one application is the right answer. But the walled gardens that we’re faced with today aren’t the right answer either."
Initially, when Thunderbird was moved away from Mozilla, I was under the impression that Mozilla have lost interest in Thunderbird and they are dumping it into a new subsidiary. I was wrong, and I’m glad that Mozilla Messaging is planning something to improve Thunderbird.
For those who are dying to have a glimpse of Thunderbird 3, Ascher has promised that they’ll probably make some public release within three months.
