High Definition Format War is slowly sliding towards the end?

hddvd_logo Looks like HD DVD is losing its battle against Blu-Ray. Last Week, Netflix announced that they will discontinue HD DVD from their rentals service. Best Buy and Walmart also followed by announcing that they’ll exclusively support Blu-Ray.

Rumors have been floating that Toshiba, one of the largest supporters and manufacturer of HD DVD equipments is planning to ditch HD DVD and close down production. Official announcement from Toshiba is expected by next week, but Reuters has some anonymous sources inside the company, which indicate that the format war is over.

Sony’s Playstation 3 gave them an upper hand, since it can play Blu-Ray movies. Microsoft has already hinted that it might consider Blu-Ray for their Xbox game console, which currently works only with HD DVD.

Those who have invested in HD DVD equipment will surely feel disappointed, but at the same time this doesn’t mean Blu-Ray is ready to replace our DVDs. Blu-Ray discs are pricey, compared to DVDs. It will take some time before Blu-Ray becomes widely accepted, just like the DVD.

    blue-ray rocks!

This is hard to believe. I have never even used a blu-ray disc to this point, but I love HD DVD’s. As a customer of netflix, this is going to suck a bit for me.

Takes me back to the days of VHS vs Betamax. Why do they never learn?

Having said that, I have not got around to buying an HDTV yet, so I am happy to wait until the format war resolves itself.

Same as flash gamer said, since Ihave netflix and never used a blu-ray, this is going to be bad probably. I may be behind with having the latest technology, because I still use VHS. I’mnot sure if my machine can play blu-ray or not!

Of Course Blu-Ray better then HD DVD. New technologies must overtake old, it’s natural!

I have never used a Blu-Ray either. But I got used to my DVD. I’m rather disappointed

In response to Steve Elliot’s comment. HDTV has nothing to do with the format wars of DVD/Blu-Ray. HDTV is it’s own entity and the TV will function perfectly no matter what the DVD box format is.
