Rumors are running that Apple might drop the prices on iPhone and iPod Touch line-up in another month or two. The price drop is expected to be $100 on all models, while discontinuing lower end models of iPod Touch, just like how they did for 4GB iPhone during the last price cut.
Falling prices of flash storage are believed to be the primary reason for the price cut. The new prices are expected to look like this:
- 16GB iPod Touch - $299
- 32GB iPod Touch - $399
- 8GB iPod Touch - to be discontinued.
Â
- 8GB iPhone - $299
- 16GB iPhone - $399
Some are also speculating that the 8GB iPhone will be discontinued, but from my personal views, I don’t think it would be wise for Apple to do that. Maybe, lowering the cost of an 8GB iPhone to $299 might incredibly boost their sales and help them reach their 10 million sales figure quite easily.
Forbes believes that 3G version of iPhone is just around the corner, so they suggest their readers to hold-off their plans to buy iPhone. 3G iPhone is expected to hit stores in Summer.
Existing owners of iPhone or iPod Touch may not be happy if this rumor turns out to be true, but overall, I think it’ll help Apple gain more marketshare and reach their sales figure quickly. Let’s hope they announce this price cut at this month-end’s (rumored) special event.
Will Apple give $100 rebate to existing users? iPod Nano also uses flash storage, so will it be getting the price cut as well?

I would feel bad for the people who already bought one of the items and if now the price is going to be lower. They would think t themselves, “why did I buy it early?” Bu if they do get a rebate it won’t be so bad. You never know though,a rumor is a rumor.

Oh that’s great news. I have been wanting to buy an iphone since quite sometime. Now I shall buy it only after the prices drop.

This was inevitable! with goggle’s android-based prototypes out, and tough competition from devices liek garmin’s Nuvifone, Apple needs to entice more customers!!

It will be interesting to see whether the price drops ever reach us over the pond in the UK and if so, to what extent.
In addition to the upfront cost, we are also committed to a £35 a month line rental plan with O2. I would love to own the iPhone but my mobile is supplied by my work and they flatly refuse to pay that much (:
We call it rip-off Britain for a reason !

Sweet. I think this will give Nokia a run for their money. I mean, we all are soo fed up of their crappy handsets with nothing good but a supped up cam.
iPhone rocks. And yeah, I would wait till the 3G phone. I’m ready to shell out some money for that. I wonder it gets here in India. Any idea, Thilak ….. anybody ?

I might even think of switching of the price is dropped low enough. The primary reason I didnt buy the phone when it came out was A, the price and B, the short comings such as no copy paste. These things are being resolved slowly and one at a time, so maybe its coming to that time.

I totally agree with Tech Roach, I myself is quite fed up with Nokia handsets. They are very user friendly, but look wise I feel they need to make some good changes to their phones.
