Back up your Flickr Photos using FlickrEdit

If you are a hardcore Flickr user, this piece of information is worth spending five minutes on. I recently stumbled on a free open source Java Desktop application called FlickrEdit that enables backup of all Flickr photos on your personal computer. Not only that, it also allows burning of these photos on a CD or a DVD with great ease.

Using FlickrEdit, you can download or upload any photo to and from Flickr. Besides taking backup, FlickrEdit features photo search based on date and tags; rotation of photos; deletion of photos or sets; switch between multiple Flickr users; display your Not in Set, Recent, Favorites, Contacts and Group photos, and much more.

The new application is written in Java and uses flickrj framework for accessing Flickr.

Here’s what you need to do in order to get started.

  1. Launch FlickrEdit from here. Alternatively, install the Windows executable on Windows platform or Java jar file on other platforms from here.

  2. Install the application after the download and run it. You’ll receive a prompt to enter your Flickr account login details.

  3. Enter the login details and proceed to a window containing all your Flickr Photos.

  4. Select the photos you want to backup and run the backup Wizard.

  5. Choose between the two options:
+ Backup to hard drive (you can also create zip files using this option.)
+ Backup to Media (you can burn photos to a CD or DVD disc using this option.)

  6. Click the Start Backup button to backup all the selected photos. If you have a large amount of photos, the time taken for backup will also be more.

Finally, if you are looking for a better way to access your Flickr Photos, you can surely try FlickrEdit without a second thought.

  • Nice tool; But I am wondering why the post is titled "Backup your flickr photos", one of the reasons I bought Flickr account was to backup all my photos to an online service !

But for downloading the photos in one shot, the tool will definitely come in handy.
