Drawing inspiration from Facebook and Google playbook, Meebo, the popular online instant messenger aggregating service, has just unveiled its new Application Program Interface (API) for chat-based Meebo Rooms and Meebo Network, a partnership with “premium community, media and entertainment partners,” with whom the company will share half the ad revenue generated by Rooms.
Aimed specifically towards social networks, and large media and entertainment websites, the company is readying to introduce plug-ins from five launch partners (Piczo, Revision3, RockYou, Social Project, and Tagged) with this release.
Launched in May 2007, Meebo Rooms are customizable spaces that allow users to enjoy instant messaging along with the benefits of sharing web links and media such as, videos and images.
Martin Green, Meebo’s vice president of business, said in a statement,
“Today’s API announcement, as well as the launch partners for our ad-supported Meebo Network, will bring Meebo and our partners closer to the goal of giving people the ability to connect, engage and discuss anything of common interest.”
The large-scale implementation of Meebo Rooms includes:
- Chat room on every “group” page of a social network
- Chat room on the “comments” section of a blog
- Live community groups for artists or shows
Each Meebo room built with the new API will contain ads and the company will share 50% of the ad revenue with its partners.
Meebo released a similar developer platform initiative in October last year, featuring four partners.
Finally, if you are looking to monetize your site, Meebo Rooms (and Widgets) might turn out to be a good option.

I only discovered Meebo about 10 days ago after an e-mail from a friend.
He hates everything Microsoft with a vengeance and wont have MSN on his PC, so started using Meebo. I don’t have such strong views but like what I have seen of it so far.
