Dell has partnered with Microsoft to release (PRODUCT) RED-branded PCs. As most of you already know, (PRODUCT) RED is an initiative started by U2’s Steve Bono and Bobby Shriver to help raise funds to fight AIDS in Africa.
Product Red edition of Dell XPS M1330, XPS M1530, XPS One will feature a special (PRODUCT) RED edition of Windows Vista which will include 6 Wallpapers, 2 Sidebar Gadgets, 1 Screensaver and 1 Dreamscene Movie in Product Red flavor.
Dell’s Product Red laptops will have red colored lids and Product Red logo on the palm rest along with the custom Windows Vista theme.
They have also unveiled Dell 948 All-in-one (PRODUCT) RED Printer which goes on sale for $99. Depending upon the PC model, Dell and Microsoft will collectively donate $50 – $80 to the Global Fund. Dell will contribute $5 for every (PRODUCT) RED printer sold.
I was just wondering why Dell was just promoting Product Red in their premium XPS line-up of notebooks. They already sell red colored Inspiron Notebooks, and I’m quite sure that a considerable number of Inspiron customers will be willing to pay a premium price for charity and to get the goodies which come along.
It’s good to see companies like Apple, Motorola and Dell step forward to help raise the Global Fund. But companies participating in (PRODUCT) RED have been criticized in the past for spending more on advertising their products than donating for charity. Let’s hope that Microsoft and Dell pull this one off with great success.
