Folks from Gizmodo have revealed that one of the oldest hacks to beat the time-restricted stuff on your computer still works with iTunes Movie Rental service. Apple measures the amount of time remaining on your video rental based on your local system clock. So, if you set the clock to the future and start playing the movie, and then set the clock back to the present time, you can actually beat the 24 hours restriction and watch the movie indefinitely.
Apple might be already working on fixing this mistake, but how did such a silly mistake ever happen? A simple check between the date the movie was rented on iTunes, and the local system date would be good enough to fix this flaw.
I’m wondering what would happen if the fix to this flaw requires users to upgrade to a newer version of iTunes. Users can simply hold back on upgrade and enjoy rented movies for ever. Sooner or later, someone will break the DRM of iTunes Movie Rental service.
