adobe reader logo For viewing PDF files, I prefer Foxit Reader over Adobe Reader because it’s much faster. The fact that Adobe Reader is bloated with unnecessary plugins is nothing new. As a solution, we had an article on a tool called Adobe Reader Speedup which disables certain components of Adobe Reader to speed it up.

Another alternative is Adobe Reader Lite. It’s works just as good as Adobe Reader Speedup, but instead of installing Adobe Reader and then disabling some plugins, Adobe Reader Lite comes with only essential plugins.

It’s not clear which plugins have been removed from Adobe Reader, but it opens PDF documents quickly and consumes significantly less storage space than the full version of Adobe Reader.

Please note that you need to remove Adobe Reader 8 before attempting to install Adobe Reader Lite. This reminds me of QuickTime Alternative and Real Player Alternative. Both stripped ads and unnecessary plugins to make the software work faster.

  1. I use foxit reader and dont have any good reason to switch back to adobe. Only thing is in my PC, Foxit crashes if I select any text from a pdf and press Ctrl+C to copy it. :(

  2. from starting i m using the adobe reader .. while loading page directly form net it took hell lot of time and hangs firefox also for few minutes.. i hope this lite version will be light on system resources..

  3. Nice move by Adobe. Feeling the heat of Foxit maybe? :D
