vistapreview Back in January, Yahoo! had announced their intentions to build a Vista-specific version of Yahoo Messenger, but it so far it wasn’t materialized. Hopes slightly faded away when Yahoo! released Yahoo Messenger 9. I began wondering if Yahoo! will ever release a Vista variant of their popular instant messenger client.

Fortunately, Yahoo! was still working and a download preview of the same is available now. You can download it from here.

Vista-specific version of Yahoo Messenger has several edges over the standard version of Yahoo Messenger. It utilizes quite a few features like Vista’s Sidebar and Windows Presentation Foundation. This video will show how it actually works like:

Overall, I’m happy that Yahoo is doing something to impress their Vista crowd. I didn’t try it myself, but it looks too fancy for me. I’d assume that those fancy looks come at the cost of performance.

Yahoo Messenger Blog says that not all features of standard Yahoo Messenger is available on this version (c`mon, this is just a preview), but more and more features will be added as they near final release. Since it’s just a preview beta, don’t expect it to be bug free.

  1. It… it looks pretty good. I’m surprised. No ugly ad bar at the bottom and it looks slick. More like a Widget than Yahoo Messenger.

  2. is there any way to use this yahoo messenger for vista on XP???

  3. I tested it in the morning did a small review too… till now its working good haven’t had any crashes..it lacks some basic features thou..

  4. I love yahoo messenger that is very good news for me I couldn’t use in vista and I had changed my os to xp

  5. Yahoo is trying to be the first person to come out with a version of their messenger for vista or so I have heard. AIM is already working on a IM for vista that is in beta 1. If yahoo doesn’t hurry up they will end up dead-last in the race to make a final version of a IM for vista. Aim works much faster at coming out with a new version that yahoo has so far. Yahoo has been twiddling their thumbs with a few select people working on the messenger when they obviously need more people to get a final version finished before anyone else. AIM and possibly another IM out there might beat yahoo to the final version if they don’t hurry up and finish the final version.

  6. it is cooooooooooooooooool
