After months of pre-release testing, Firefox 3 has finally crawled into beta, which means developers and testers can start playing with Firefox 3 and help Mozilla in weeding out bugs from the final release, which is probably one or two months away. Don’t expect to see the unexpected in Firefox 3. Just few bug squashing and security improvements:
- Updated Gecko rendering engines, which makes the browser a bit more stable.
- Improved form of website identity and security, malware protection, stricter SSL error pages, anti-virus integration in the download manager, and version checking for insecure plugins.
- New Places feature, which makes it easier to find the most frequently visited, recently visited and starred sites.
Although most reviews are positive, Duncan Riley wrote an interesting negative review on TechCrunch about the memory usage of Firefox. I have to admit, that the memory usage of Firefox 3 Beta 1 is pretty much the same as Firefox 2. I guess Mozilla’s plan on prioritizing over memory usage issue was plain talking and nothing else. Why jump to the conclusion, let’s wait for final version to talk about memory usage.
