High Quality Videos coming soon on YouTube
YouTube is the king of the hill when it comes to online videos, but that’s not the same for their video quality. Other video sharing sites like Blip.tv and Brightcove beat YouTube in many aspects. Video quality is one among those. At NewTeeVee Live, Om Malik and Liz Gannes had a chat with YouTube co-founder, Steve Chen. He told that within the next three months, we should be able to see high quality videos on YouTube.
At the initial stage, YouTube won’t be offering high quality videos to everyone. They plan to detect the speed of the viewer’s internet connection and then decide whether to offer high quality or not. Why? Because some viewers don’t have broadband connection and offering high quality video streams to non-broadband users might destroy their viewing experience as it takes endlessly long to buffer the video.
YouTube has an internal archive of all videos sent in their native resolution, but some uploaders stripped down their resolution to 320×240, so converting such videos won’t help. Some blogs are confusing high quality with HD, but Liz Gannes has confirmed that he didn’t mention anything about HD.
