How-to: Gmail Mobile App with Google Apps Account

I was a great fan of Gmail’s mobile application. I could read my mails wherever I go. But recently after switching over to Google Apps, I couldn’t use the application because it refused to let me in. This is really very weird because there are no technical reasons for Gmail’s mobile application not being compatible with Google Apps.

Eagle-eyed commentator over at Lifehacker has found a work around which allows Google Apps users to read there mails on Gmail’s mobile application. The process involves downloading two older versions of Gmail’s mobile application. Here’s what you should do to get it working:

  • Browse to ‘gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar’ and download the version 1.0 client
  • Enter your login information (your username should be your full Google Apps email address, i.e. me@mydomain.net
  • You will get an error after the client tries to pull up the inbox. Just exit out of the application.
  • Now go and download v1.1.1 by browsing to: gmail.com/app/v1.1.1/L1/gmail-g.jar
  • After it installs select ‘Keep existing data’ on your phone when prompted
  • Now when you start up gmail it will use the saved login credentials from the previous install and work just dandy

It worked well for me, but for some reason Ionut from Google Operating System couldn’t get it working. I hope the next version allows me to log into Google Apps without any hiccups.
