TechCrunch is reporting that Yahoo! has signed up a deal with Picnik to incorporate their online photo editing tools with Flickr. At present, Picnik allows users to import their photos from Flickr. After the deal gets implemented, Flickr will have a whole new set of editing option for their photos.

Users can do more than just rotating their photos on a new Flickr page which includes Picnik’s flash based photo editor. After editing, users can either add it as a new photo to their album or overwrite the existing photo (pro users only). The integration is expected to finish in the next few months.

I’m wondering why Yahoo! developers didn’t bother building a similar tool themselves? They could have atleast acquired Picnik and added its editing capabilities to Flickr directly.

As a Flickr Pro user, I usually do some adjustments to my photos using Live Photo Gallery, or Picasa before sending them live. I’m totally comfortable with editing offline. I’m not sure, if the integration will be useful to Flickr users. Sometimes integration will end-up in an acquisition, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.

  1. It seems to be Yahoo’s thing to buy companies up rather then create their own competing product.
