Wuala is a free storage service for anybody who wants to store or share their stuff on the web. Unlike any other storage service, Wuala is completely decentralized, which means they won’t store your data on their servers. Instead, they make use of unused space on participating members’ hard drives to build large, secure and reliable storage cloud.
To start, you’ll be given with 1GB of free storage. You can get more storage, if you are willing to trade some of your space on hard drive for online storage. They say that their download speeds are super fast with no file size or traffic limit.
For those concerned about privacy, Wuala encrypts your files before sending them over to other computers. Only you and those authorized by you can access your files. Both encryption and decryption is done locally on your computer, which means, you don’t have to send your password to anyone (not even Wuala). Users have the option share their files with the public.
You need to install Wuala desktop application (both Mac and PC supported) before you can start trading your space. At the moment, Wuala is in its closed alpha version. It should be available for users within few months from now.
I think it’s truly a ground-breaking idea, but with no file size limit and the ability to share files with everyone, I think Wuala has the potential to become another warez playground. What do you think? Tell me through comments.
