Wuala is a free storage service for anybody who wants to store or share their stuff on the web. Unlike any other storage service, Wuala is completely decentralized, which means they won’t store your data on their servers. Instead, they make use of unused space on participating members’ hard drives to build large, secure and reliable storage cloud.

To start, you’ll be given with 1GB of free storage. You can get more storage, if you are willing to trade some of your space on hard drive for online storage. They say that their download speeds are super fast with no file size or traffic limit.

For those concerned about privacy, Wuala encrypts your files before sending them over to other computers. Only you and those authorized by you can access your files. Both encryption and decryption is done locally on your computer, which means, you don’t have to send your password to anyone (not even Wuala). Users have the option share their files with the public.

You need to install Wuala desktop application (both Mac and PC supported) before you can start trading your space. At the moment, Wuala is in its closed alpha version. It should be available for users within few months from now.

I think it’s truly a ground-breaking idea, but with no file size limit and the ability to share files with everyone, I think Wuala has the potential to become another warez playground. What do you think? Tell me through comments.

  1. Almost all of us have unused space on computers. I think its a great way to leverage that. Thumbs up from me.

  2. Maybe next generation of P2P but definitely not secure storage. For crackers, its like having everything sent to them. lol

  3. hmm…new concept..but not sure how many will be willing to trade their hard drive space for extra online storage space thro. someone else’s computer…rather i will store it on my computer and share only what is needed thro. online storage(using 1 GB free space)…

Users’ pcs may not always be on..so how will they get the files stored in their users’ pcs, when required?

one more question i have is,what if someone else is able to break the encryption logic…there is always this risk…

  4. Indyank: Actually, Wuala will store multiple copies of the file on different computer. At any given time, their application should be able to retrieve it from some computer, or the other.

  5. Sreejith: Right, but then again, who would want to share very confidential stuff over P2P?

  6. @Thilak, exactly. This service won’t flourish as a tool for sharing confidential stuff. Its gonna be the next Limewire or Bit torrent or something.

  7. Storage is becoming cheap and cheap, so we don’t have to worry about it. This seems to be a new concept but a failure from my side.

Thilak although they store several copies of same file in different computer yet we suffer from traffic and network problem. No one wills to share their empty space ! Not me !

  8. Its much similar to torrent. So, don’t jump to the conclusion that it wont work out.
