New Version of Gmail Mobile Released

Gmail has released a brand new version of Gmail’s Java application for mobile phones. Gmail Mobile 1.5 now shows yours bandwidth usage whenever it loads or refreshes. It comes extremely useful for those running on pay-as-you-go plans. Other new features include an option to access your contacts easily from the menu. The new contact option shows you the same contact information as seen in the standard version of Gmail. You can see email address, photo and recent conversation. You can also call your contact, if you have stored his/her phone number.

Gmail 1.5 lets you save your incomplete message, but surprisingly, the incomplete message is not stored as draft. Instead, it is stored in your phone and you can store just one incomplete message at any given time.

Oddly, the application automatically appends an ad at the bottom of each message, which reads: “Sent from Gmail for mobile | mobile.google.com”. There is an option in the settings to disable this promotion ad, but still I think it’s a bad way to promote the Gmail Mobile. If it was Yahoo! or Hotmail doing the same in their mobile mail application, it was absolutely fine. Can’t imagine Google is doing this!

To install or upgrade Gmail Mobile, just go to gmail.com/app from your mobile browser.

Tip: I tried installing Gmail Mobile 1.5 in my N95’s phone memory, but the app failed to open. Later, I had to re-install it on my memory card to get it working. I’m not sure, if it has something to do with my phone or if I’m the only one facing this problem.

  • Compared to Yahoo! or Hotmail, Google does less advertising. Gmail almost looks ad-free. Anyway, I had a problem with the previous Gmail Mobile. It somehow cannot upload messages from the device. Hope they fixed it. Symbian is crap. Very unreliable. That may be the reason. Isnt it ?
  • I tried it just today and found it excellent.

They have done a great job redesigning the Gmail interface for phones. Very usable and it even emulates the conversation view well.

The line at the bottom you mentioned doesn't really count as an ad. Many mobile blogging and email applications insert such self-advertising text in posts and email respectively. It isn't as bad as Yahoo mail putting random ads INSIDE the email.

Too bad GPRS is so expensive.
  • Sreejith: True, Symbian has always been buggy. Unfortunately, it is one of the widely accepted mobile platform with hell lot of third party applications.

Marc: Where do you live? Here in India, GRPS is pretty cheap. You just have to pay just half a dollar for a whole day.
  • With talks about Gphones all around,it is no wonder google is focussing on mobile versions of its sites....news doing rounds currently is Google Ready to Ship 50,000 G-Phones for Developers to Test
  • i get to know about the new version after i ve used it once :D also the mobile gmail doesn't have the option of attachments..
