Just three weeks ago, Amazon’s launched their DRM-free music store, which offered DRM-free music starting from 89 cents to a maximum 99 cents. At that time, Apple’s iTunes was selling DRM-free music for $1.29. Consumers clearly felt that Amazon’s offerings were a lot cheaper than Apple’s iTunes Plus service.

Apple just made an official announcement telling us that DRM-free songs on iTunes Plus service will now be sold at 99 cents. This was an inevitable move by Apple, to match against their competition.

Before taking the price plunge, users had an option to upgrade their DRMed music into DRM-free iTunes Plus version for 30 cents. It’s not clear whether Apple is thinking of giving free upgrade, but according to one of the commentators on Ars, the upgrade still costs 30 cents, regardless of the change in pricing. He went on to say:

"I’m holding off on upgrading them, hoping I’ll get to upgrade them for free. I’d rather not have to pay again if I don’t have to."

Competition is healthy for consumers in any industry!
