I hate writing too much about Apple, but it seems like they have something big almost every day. Apple claims that iPod Touch is the best iPod ever built. Yes indeed, because hackers have now figured out a way to install iPhone apps (or any third party app) into iPod Touch. Gizmodo reader, Felix, was able to achieve this by decrypting iPod Touch’s ramdisk. Here’s a screenshot of iPod Touch running Google Maps:

I think hackers are now doing what Apple should have done in the first place. I don’t understand what stopped Apple from pre-installing Mail or Google Maps application on iPod Touch. It runs on the same operating system, and has built-in WiFi, so why not include these apps out-of-the-box?

These days, WiFi hotspots are so common to fine. Just run into a coffee shop and most likely you’ll be able to access internet over WiFi. It makes complete sense to have those third party applications on an iPod Touch. Unfortunately, third party apps are still too far from being easily installable for the faint hearted ones. Best of luck hackers!

Sidenote: Also checkout the new WebApps directory for iPhone and iPod Touch users. It’s a place where you can find all the web applications which can neatly fit on tiny touch sensitive screen.

  1. apple probably have to setup an hackers’ team within…

  2. Indyank: If it’s within Apple, then they won’t be called as hackers. Apple Developers… ? (I guess)

  3. With all the patches, apps being released so quickly.. I really am beginning to doubt if Apple can’t be involved in all this. They definitely are helping the hackers/unlockers in some way or the others. The reason they can’t publically help is because Apple is earning a lot of money from AT&T and other exclusive telecom operators that are giving the iPhone with the plans!!

  4. Saptarshi: Yeah, that’s something which cannot be ruled out. Some of these hackers might actually be Apple employees unofficially working on unlocking and hacking iPhone. But then again, we all know about Apple’s Secrecy right?
