As per Gmail’s infinite+1 plan, their storage space is ever increasing, but rival Yahoo! Mail quickly spoilt Gmail’s game by offering unlimited storage space. Inevitably, Gmail has responded back by speeding up the storage counter on their homepage. The free storage space will gradually increase in upcoming days. According to numbers put up by Googlified:
Gmail’s storage space will reach 4.2GB by October 23rd. It will grow by another 2.8GB by January 4th, which takes the total free storage to 6GB. After January 4th, Gmail’s storage space will grow by 3.3MB every day, which approximately comes up to 10 times than current growth rate. And by the year 2038, Gmail will offer a whooping 42GB of storage. Cool!
Google’s paid storage has been upped as well. For the same price, you’ll be getting around 50% more storage.
- 10GB for $20 per year
- 40GB for $75 per year
- 150GB for $250 per year
- 400GB for $500 per year
Eventually, the number might sound too unrealistic, but in the current scenario, I think Gmail must really abandon their infinity+1 plan and jump onto unlimited storage bandwagon, just like how Yahoo! did.

But that counter was really interesting. I’d say that it is one of the things which gave it popularity. If they go on to unlimited, I don’t think it’ll match its marketing strategies. I think it needs to innovate something different to bring back customers from Yahoo!

I don’t use Yahoo Mail. I don’t know anyone that does use it. No one in any of my ‘groups’ use it. Anyone with Gmail doesn’t “…have to come back…” ! They never left in the first place.

400GB of space for emails? Why not just lug around a portable hard drive? Seriously, I just can’t see how anyone could practically use up so much space on emails, and I really can’t see how people could want to pay for it. Oh well, I guess big numbers make users happy.
