Trying to catch up with other search engine players, Yahoo announced the addition of some amjor improvements to their search engine and calls it as "new Yahoo! Search". The major changes you’ll notice is the introduction of Search Assist, a search suggestion and refinement tool which has been under Yahoo’s test bed since July.

Search results on Yahoo are now blended with multimedia content like videos, images and shortcuts to other Yahoo Properties whenever available. For instance, searching for "Spiderman 3 Trailer" will show results from Yahoo! Movies along with embedded videos from video sharing sites like YouTube, which can be player right from the search result page.

Multimedia results are now offered across all major search engines like recently unveiled Google Universal Search, Ask 3D and Microsoft Live Search.

I have to admit that Yahoo’s search interface with drop down search suggestions is one of the finest I’ve seen so far. Yahoo and Google are taking two different ways in improving their search engine. While Google cares much about simplicity, Yahoo focuses more on interface and functionality. The search suggestion feature worked better than my expectations, but if you don’t like it, you can disable it easily.

  1. The new search definitely looks good, but does it have the capacity to beat Google? :-)

  2. Hopefully Y will get this right first time - it sounds like a worthwhile enhancement and hopefully could bring them back some much needed market share
