Leaving your laptop unattended in public places like a conference hall or library is a foolish thing to do, but there are many instances where you’ll be forced to do so. It may not be possible for you to carry your laptop, just to have a coffee from a nearby vending machine or go to the toilet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for thieves to steal your laptop…

So what’s the solution? Either lock your laptop with any Notebook Lock cable or use free utility called Laptop Alarm. It’s somewhat like a car burglar alarm. Whenever someone tries to unplug the laptop from a power source or tried to shutdown or logoff or maybe unplug attached mouse, it rings the alarm using your laptop’s inbuilt speakers.

MacBook users can try a similar anti theft utility called iAlarmU. It not only rings the alarm, but also captures the photo of the thief using your MacBook’s inbuilt iSight webcam and emails it to you.

Using the above mentioned utilities doesn’t mean that your laptop is immune to theft. The thief can still walk away with your laptop, if he is smart enough to turn off your laptop by removing the battery.

  1. It might not be 100% proof but its more than enough to make thieves think before he steals or at least can give a surprise

  2. A thief is always going to be smart… :) The best is to hand it over to the caretaker of the library or the conference, when you want to go for a cup of cofee or to attend nature’s calls leaving your laptop behind

  3. in our place , i thought that only cellphone is the target of thieves but now they also target laptops and ipods

  4. That’s cool. I leave my laptop unguarded all the time at Starbucks. And everytime I panic a little wondering if a criminal is going to come swooping and steal it in the 2 seconds I’m grabbing a cup of tea. Definitely will check out this site…
