Google’s Presentation App is out

The long anticipated online Presentation service by Google is finally here. This Presentation app somewhat completes the Google’s Office Suite, so they have decided to shorten the name to just Google Docs (prior to this, it was Google Docs and Spreadsheet).

It includes all the basic features of a PowerPoint clone, however, it doesn’t seem to stand out as a threat to PowerPoint, web based after all! Google Account holders can start-off with presentation by either creating New ->Presentation or by uploading your existing PPT file.

The downside is that you cannot export the presentation as PPT. The only way to view the presentation without active internet connection is to save the web based presentation as ZIP file and then view it on any browser without internet. One of the greatest things missing out is charts and diagrams. Most businesses often use presentation to display graphs and charts, and ironically Google Spreadsheet supports this, but not presentations.

I think Google targeted basic users while developing the presentation app. They’ve add 15 stylish themes, however, only 5 pre-formatted layouts are available. I was expecting a way to embed YouTube videos, but it has not been implemented yet!

Overall, it didn’t really impress me. It gets sluggish, unresponsive and doesn’t work in Opera.
