Yahoo Mail moves out of beta, gets text messaging ability

Yahoo is all set to move Yahoo Mail out of beta today and introduce some interesting new features like the ability to send text messages to a cell phone. Yahoo is the first web-based email provider to offer this feature.

You can choose between email, IM and text message by clicking on the drop down button at the top. You may type-in your contact’s name or phone number to send a text message to him/her for free. Once you send, it appears in a talk bubble with your avatar in a new window tab. The person receiving the text message can directly respond to this message and interact with you. This way, you can keep in-touch with your contacts, even if they are logged off.

Other notable changes include performance improvements and shortcuts to add address to contact, view them on map, add event to calendar and even perform web search. This new version of Yahoo Mail isn’t fully rolled-out. It is expected to globally available within six weeks.

I was pretty excited to try out the text messaging feature, but it hasn’t been enabled on my account. If anybody was able to try it out, please share your experience through comments.
