India over takes US as Nokia’s Second Largest Market

nokia_logo World’s largest cellphone manufacture, Nokia, has revealed that India has overtaken United States as the second largest handset market after China.

Nokia had expected India to overtake US as second largest market after China by 2010, but thanks to falling call rates which further boosted handset sales and made this milestone arrive by 2007. Out of 185 million mobile phone users in India, 85 million use Nokia phones.

When Nokia started its operation here in India, they just had 250 employees. And now the number has grown over 9000. 18 months back, they launched a manufacturing unit in Chennai which shipped more than 60 million handsets to over 58 countries. Impressive achievement by Nokia!

Nokia phones are in my opinion the most reliable. There are various other companies offering similar features on cheaper handsets, but nokia handsets are known for their quality. You almost never need to visit a service center for your nokia handset. So this achievement is well-deserved.

I’m not surpised with this article. India is becoming Asia’s technological hub. Also, the increase in India’s population also means an increase in possible market for Nokia’s products.

That’s a great achievement by Nokia but I am sure they are gonna suffer on their reputation for quite a while after the recent battery overheating (and blasts!) issues. I am personally content with my humble Sony Ericcsson. Here’s a post on my blog that I drafter entirely on my cell phone: learn-spanish-body-parts-in-minutes

It’s not surprising considering the population of India. I visited the country after a gap of about 6 years and was amazed at the way the country has developed since then.
