Open Source Innovator, Sourcefire, has announced that they have acquired the widely accept open source antivirus engine ClamAV. Recently at LinuxWorld, ClamAV was found to be one among the three antivirus solutions to provide 100% detection rate.
Sourcefire is well known for their open source network intrusion detection and prevention system called “Snort”. Both ClamAV engine and its virus signature database will continue to grow as an open source project, but under the financial backing of Sourcefire.
Sourcefire’s press release reads: “With nearly 1 million unique IP addresses downloading ClamAV malware updates daily across more than 120 mirrors in 38 countries, ClamAV is one of the most broadly adopted open source security projects worldwide. ClamAV has also been recognized as comparable in quality and coverage to leading commercial anti-virus solutions”
I’ve been using ClamWin (Windows port of ClamAV) for quite some time now and I’ve had no real problems with either detecting or removing infected items. It will be interesting to see what Sourcefire can do to improve ClamAV and its subsidiaries.

Looks very impressive to me. A 100% detection rate would put all of the other programs in the dust.
