Google Adds StarOffice into Google Pack

Google Pack LogoGoogle Pack got a new component with the inclusion of StarOffice, an office application developed by Sun. It’s pretty strange because StarOffice would normally cost you $69.95, but with Google Pack you’ll get it free of cost. Moreover, Google didn’t choose OpenOffice.org ? an open source office suite based on StarOffice source and sponsored by Sun.

StarOffice Google Pack

Both StarOffice and OpenOffice are pretty much the same, except for some proprietary elements like templates, fonts, cliparts and other Microsoft Office Migration tools available in StarOffice. Google has tightly integrated their search toolbar within StarOffice applications and all your documents will be automatically indexed by Google Desktop.

This gives Google an extra desktop office suite in their arsenal against MS Office. I expect tighter integration between StarOffice and Google Docs & Spreadsheets in the days to come. Maybe a plugin for StarOffice which lets us create documents and save it online.

Kinda surprises me too. But still a long way to go before this combo can seriously challenge MS offshit.
